The members of the Discovery team attached the harmonic component to the space station

In mission STS-120 there will be no less than five spacewalks for the purpose of assembling the International Space Station

19: 00 Update

Less than a day after the crew members of the Discovery mission STS-120 arrived at the International Space Station, they had already conducted the first of five spacewalks for this mission.

Astronauts Scott Friesensky and Doug Wilcock completed the first spacewalk at 12:16 EST (18:16 Israel time). During the operation, which lasted 6 hours and 14 minutes, the members of the shuttle crew and the 16th crew of the space station installed the harmonic component - which will increase the volume of work, storage and living on the space station in a temporary location on the space station, and began preparations for the repositioning of another component - P6.

The astronauts removed and stored the S-BAND radio antenna assembly structure. They strengthened the cargo hold devices for the Harmonic component, which could not be mounted on the component before it was launched from Earth, removed the cover that protected the component during its launch and disconnected the power cables connecting the Harmonic to Discovery.

When the preparation of the component by the astronauts was completed, the astronauts inside the shuttle and the station continued to transfer the harmonic component to its place on another American component - Unity.

13: 40 Update

The first spacewalk on the STS-120 mission began

It is expected to end at half past six in the evening

Astronauts Scott Parzynski and Doug Wilcock began at 6:02 a.m. EST (12:02 p.m. Israel time) the first spacewalk on the STS-120 mission, and it is expected to end at about 12:30 p.m. (18:30 p.m. Israel time.).

Astronaut Palo Nespoli will serve as the spacewalk coordinator and assist the spacewalkers in their missions from within the shuttle. Whereas Stephanie Wilson, Clay Anderson (who stayed on the station and will return to Earth on the Discovery shuttle) and his replacement Daniel Tanney are responsible for operating the station's robotic arm.

The astronauts removed and stored the S-BAND radio antenna assembly structure. They will strengthen the cargo hold devices for the Harmonic component, which could not be mounted on the component before it was launched from Earth, remove the cover that protected the component during its launch and disconnect the power cables connecting the Harmonic to Discovery.

The three astronauts operating the robotic arm will transport the harmonica from the shuttle's cargo deck to its location, adjacent to the Unity component. Finally, they will begin preparations to move the P6 component to its new location.

  1. Yes, inside the suit there is a small container with drinking water and a tube that goes into the helmet (under the window) and allows the astronaut to drink during the spacewalk. Not everything can be inside the suit, but it is possible to pee...

  2. Thank you very much for the update

Just out of general curiosity - when they are spacewalking for six or eight hours, do they have any way to drink water or maybe even snack on some lamb?
