The Council for Higher Education held this week, Sunday July 12, 2009, the annual conference on the topic of academic involvement in the community, and as part of it, institutions and students were awarded MLA awards for excellence in social involvement by Ms. Shush Berlinsky-Shanfeld. The special conference and the distribution of excellence awards to students and institutions of higher education constitute the annual high point in the extensive activity of the academy's involvement in the community that takes place throughout the school year and also during vacations between semesters and between academic school years.

The "Academia at the heart of the community" conference was held in Jerusalem and dozens of people engaged in social involvement took part, among them the deans of students at the institutions, rectors and academic secretaries, managers of the "Parah" and "Achievements" funds, managers of the Matal program (learning functions system) and students.

The steering committee of the MLA Awards for Excellence in Social Engagement named after Ms. Shosh Berlinski-Shanfeld found that for their activities during 13 XNUMX, XNUMX students deserve the mark of excellence. The outstanding students are: Hila Zahavi (Ben-Gurion University), Vahid Ke'Abia (Haifa University), Aviva Adoniya (Ashkelon Academic College), Uri Bar-Nor (Hebrew University), Joan Harbush (Bar-Ilan University), Sa'ar Youskowitz (Technion), Dan Belchner (Technion), Orli Gal (Western Galilee Academic College), Lior Lapid (Tel Aviv University), Angwitz Malkmo (Rupin Academic Center), Natan Tal (Tel Hai Academic College), Anna Shapira ( Jerusalem Academy of Music) and Ofer Sela (Sapir Academic College).

The steering committee headed by Prof. Haim Goren and other members, Prof. Faisal Azaiza, Mr. Moshe Aharoni, Dr. Dafna Golan-Agnon and the chairman of the student association Boaz Toporovsky decided that the prize for institutional excellence for the year XNUMX XNUMX will be awarded to the Rupin Academic Center and University Haifa.

The CEO of MLA/VOT, CPA Steven Stav, said at the conference, "The resilience of a reformed society is not only expressed in its scientific, technological and cultural achievements, but also in the ways in which it helps weak communities and all those who have not had the opportunity to realize their potential Get on the path of progress."

B. The leading institutions in social activity:
1) The leading university in the number of hours of students is Ben-Gurion University, whose students performed 58,825 hours of social contribution during 37,750 XNUMX, followed immediately by Tel Aviv University, whose students performed XNUMX hours.
2) The leading university in shared hours for the teaching staff and students is Tel Aviv University, whose personnel performed 27,868 hours during the year 25,228 XNUMX, followed by Haifa University with XNUMX hours.
3) The leading institution in terms of the number of students who are active in social activities is the Judea and Samaria College in Ariel with 1,193 students who were active in the previous year, immediately followed by Tel Aviv University with 1,104 students and Ben-Gurion University with 1,010 students.
4) The leading college in the number of hours of students is the Sapir Academic College whose students performed 27,146 hours of social contribution in the year 16,036 XNUMX and right after it is the Jordan Valley Regional College whose students performed XNUMX hours.
5) The leading college in the number of hours shared by the teaching staff and students is Rupin Academic Center with 6,460 hours, Afava College with 3,950 hours.
