If it turns out that axions do exist, it will be the first measurement of new physics, beyond the standard model, which may include an explanation of the nature of dark matter.
Alternatively, the excess may be due to the presence of neutrinos (if their magnetic dipole field is larger than expected). This possibility may also indicate the existence of new physics. The scientists found that the probability that the measured events were caused by solar axions is the highest of the possibilities examined. "However", says Prof. Bodnik, "it is still too early to conclude about the existence of axions".
The 1 ton xenon experiment is in the process of being upgraded to its next stage, XENONnT, which will contain three times more active xenon mass. The scientists hope that this upgrade will allow them to understand and decide what the source of the excess events is. 163 scientists from 28 institutions in 11 countries are members of the international research partnership.
