Prof. Shahar Hod (39) from Hadassah College Jerusalem and the Rupin Academic Center, won a prestigious award on behalf of the International Gravity Research Foundation, "Gravity Research Foundation", as part of an essay submission competition on the subject of gravity, which has traditionally been held for six decades and is considered one of the peak events of the global physicist community. .

Over the years, the Gravity Research Foundation has awarded awards and scholarships to important and groundbreaking scientists and researchers, including the British physicist and theoretician Stephen Hawking, as well as the Israeli physicist Prof. Jacob Bekenstein, winner of the Israel Prize (2005).

Prof. Hod's article on black holes and the viscosity of materials (Gravitation, Thermodynamics, and the Bound on Viscosity), was chosen as one of the five articles that won monetary prizes on the recommendation of the judging committee, out of an estimated amount of hundreds of articles that are submitted to the competition every year.

In his article, Prof. Hood uses the complex physics of black holes in order to understand the physical properties (such as: viscosity) of mundane and simpler substances.

"In recent years, very high energy particle accelerators have been built around the world. The purpose of these accelerators is to cause collisions between elementary particles (such as: protons) which are accelerated close to the ultimate speed, the speed of light. These collisions of the protons make it possible to study the smallest structure of matter in the universe. They create a substance called "plasma". This plasma consists of the smallest building blocks (the "Lego" blocks) of matter, which are called in professional language: "quarks". This plasma is very similar to the elementary material from which the universe was created immediately after the "big bang".

"In experiments with the particle accelerators, an extraordinary and inexplicable phenomenon was discovered: the plasma of the "building blocks of nature" (quarks) has an incredibly low viscosity. The phenomenon of viscosity is a phenomenon familiar to everyone in everyday life. It is enough to look at honey that drips slowly from a spoon to understand that it is viscous (in contrast, for example, to the flow of water, which is faster due to the lower viscosity of water)."

"Hundreds of researchers around the world have been trying for several years to understand the source of the low viscosity of the plasma that is created in accelerators. Among others, three researchers named Kovtun, Son, Starinets suggested that nature may have set a lower limit on the viscosity of materials. In other words, they hypothesized that a substance with zero viscosity is not possible in nature (even thin air has some viscosity!)."

These three researchers (who won international recognition) hypothesized that the primordial plasma that is created in the energetic accelerators is the substance with the lowest viscosity in nature.

In recent years, hundreds of scientific studies have been written around the world on this hypothesis, according to which there is a lower limit on the viscosity of a material, a limit that cannot be lowered below. Many evidences were collected that showed that the viscosity limit that the researchers hypothesized was probably valid and correct.

However, the issue remains mysterious and elusive. In fact, there was no general proof of the validity of this viscosity limit. The limit was for a long time in the possession of a mere hypothesis (and not a proven scientific theorem!)

Hood: "In my article I showed that the physics of black holes can shed a lot of light on this mysterious viscosity limit.
The idea of using the physics of black holes in order to discover the limits that nature places on the physical properties of materials was formulated with great success in the past by Prof. Jacob Beckenstein (from the Hebrew University, winner of the Israel Prize)."

"In my paper I show that the mysterious and incomprehensible viscosity limit can be proven directly from the physics of black holes. This is a nice and surprising idea—the physics of black holes can also teach us about much simpler, mundane things that are close to our everyday lives!” Hod says.

  1. It's fine soup, the Christian product is no better today. It bothered me to hear an elderly American woman who helped us get to the right station in New York shouting in Hebrew Jesus is the Messiah, when she heard that we are from Israel, just as it bothered me to hear the redhead with the bicycle, the yellow flag and the cap with the inscription claiming the life of a dead person, shouting out loud Ram "Gentlemen, Christ has arrived, he is already here" in the streets of Ramat Aviv. I also have insights about the future of the State of Israel and I don't shout them in the street, maybe because I'm not a religious fanatic.

  2. He was one of the most interesting lecturers I had the honor to learn from

  3. For 3 who talked about dark mass???
Why come and doubt the brain of an Israeli scientist with a successful idea
Sure and sure when you have no idea what he's talking about at all
    Shahar well done

  4. Hugin:
Changing your names is an attempt at fraud and your attempt to present it in a different way is another attempt at fraud.
This fact is enough to damage my trust in you and of course there are many more facts that crush this trust to the bone.
I don't believe you. it's clear. And I'm sure the anonymous from 8 is you.

  5. Hugin, sorry, but on a respected site there are students who will use it for studies, you can't talk about swelling and compare any scientist who doesn't fit your New Age concept to Nazis. If you don't stop there are legal measures to make sure you don't bother us anymore.

  6. Wow, an idea.
Your lack of trust in my honesty is already your problem.
I have no obligation to stay with the same nickname on the Internet! And it won't hurt you to express yourself through a different nickname from time to time.
Indeed, it may be more interesting for the other commenters to examine whether we recognize you (Michael) through your mental perceptions alone.
It is also possible that you will discover about yourself, that you can change your attitudes in life when you are wearing a different nickname.
Probably 8 (anonymous) will remain your mystery only, at least I know in this case, what I don't.
    A successful road in Avius..

  7. I think you were also 8, but I don't really care.
All your responses are what you call idle accounting and I hope my father will come back and block you soon and maybe finally activate the abuse procedure to block you more hermetically.

  8. Dear Michael:
Censored in this joy, I am the fair Hogin :), your dear who is contrary to your perceptions:)(:.
But response 8 is not mine by chance.
Fortunately, I don't understand computers and I can't understand how the wonderful blocking mechanism works... and how after a while the blocking resets... and is released.
    -
So, the father of the feeling is free to block.
And I will continue or not continue until I discover the secrets of thought - computing - and idle calculation :)

  9. To be censored happily:
There are too many reasonable features in the response for it not to be hers.
There are all kinds of ways to evade the censor and Hugin - consciously or unconsciously - sometimes uses them.
By the way - just out of curiosity - how did you know it was censored?

  10. The anonymous 8:
    What nonsense is this?
Where did you get this "law of nature" from?
This response seems to me "hygenic", that is - illogical.
By the way - according to the Bible, God exists. Right?
So if your words are true, the Bible also says that God was created from something. Right?

  11. First of all, I must respond to number 7: according to the law of nature, biology, physics and mathematics, every round body will eventually explode.. Have you ever heard of a structure and composition like the Earth or any planet? gas? water? solid? So once in many years (very, very many - Suri doesn't know how many), every ball in space explodes and is rebuilt!
And besides... everything that exists, at some point was created from something - even according to the Bible (if anything, then already)..
And regarding the gravity facts - note that the article is short and does not focus on physical facts. It seems likely that whoever is interested can always find the article and read in depth. You don't publish articles just like that.. Apparently there is some meat..

  12. I don't understand why they insist on assuming that the universe was created, instead of thinking that the universe exists...

  13. I did not see Prof. Shahar Hood's scientific rationale in the article. Can someone explain or at least point in a direction - how is the viscosity limit proven from the physics of black holes?
    Thanks in advance.

  14. Yehuda:
What do we think you ask?
    Send!
After all, they surely knew what they were going to answer you, so you can ask them that before they answer you, they tell you what they intend to answer.
The truth is that I doubt if they will answer at all, but even from this you can guess what they would have answered if they had answered.

  15. And besides, what do we see here in the article?
Mysterious black holes come to explain the even more mysterious viscosity of particles? …. And no one is preparing to shout that the king is naked?
I have a nice idea, I will send to the International Gravity Research Foundation, "Gravity Research Foundation", my opinion about gravity in general and the beloved dark mass in particular. What do you think respectable commenters?
    Please respond gently
    Happy holiday
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  16. Dear point
It seems to me that your mistake is due to the fact that you did not take into account the amount of dark mass resting on your weight.
Black holes hovering over your laden plates and swallowing some of your food may turn the gravitational constant back into favor.
    Happy holiday
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  17. Maybe finally someone of Prof. Shahar's caliber will be able to enlighten me because I am encountering a strange phenomenon.
A routine weekly measurement of my weight shows that the global gravitational constant G is increasing at an alarming rate.
