The festival - a journey to the world of science will take place on September 28-27, 2010 at the Weizmann Institute of Science campus in Rehovot and will include animation and scientific cooking workshops, a Hungarian cube tournament, a scientific magic show with the magician Lior Menor, educational workshops, entertaining sessions, scientific experiments and meetings with scientists
The Science Festival is an experiential and lively celebration of science, music, culture and technology, which includes dozens of activities - displays, competitions, shows, workshops, observations, exhibitions, tours, lectures and demonstrations intended for children, teenagers and adults who want to better understand the world and learn about technologies and the inventions that will shape the future.
The festival is organized by the Davidson Institute for Science Education, which brings together the educational activities of the Weizmann Institute of Science, in cooperation with the Municipality of Rehovot. At the heart of the festival, supported by the Gron family from Chicago, is the Clore science garden, a unique science museum of its kind in the world, operating under the sky. The Science Garden includes dozens of exhibits that demonstrate physical principles and ecological phenomena and processes that affect the relationship between man and the universe and nature. As part of the science festival, the garden expands its activities and enables a wide variety of demonstrations, workshops and activities.
The diverse and rich activities of the festival will allow children and teenagers to have an experiential experience, in the first person, in observations of nature and attempts to understand. In the practical workshops, visitors will be able, among other things, to prepare and eat scientific pizza and ice cream, ride on "poppies" and see walking bicycles - from the maker's house of the Ron Verdi Center, hit a target with a giant rocket, create puppets and recycled musical instruments, try walking on a tightrope and on crutches, operate " "Robotic" soccer players, and more.
Visitors to the festival will be able to participate in demonstrations and activities by the institute's scientists, research students and instructors, who will present and demonstrate their fields of research, from the forefront of world science, in simple language that is equal to everyone. In addition, festival participants will be able to visit the home and estate of Dr. Chaim Weizmann, the first president of the State of Israel and of the Weizmann Institute of Science, see the presidential vehicle up close, and participate in tours, sessions and musical performances that will be held at the Weizmann Estate. Twice a day there is a motorized tour between special sites on the Weizmann Institute of Science campus.
Competitions
As part of the festival, there will be a national final competition in solving a Hungarian cube, in which competitors will participate
who advanced to the finals in regional competitions that took place during the summer. The final will be held on Monday, starting at 14:00 PM, in the Avner Hall at the Weizmann Institute of Science, with the participation of former world champion Dror Womberg, who will demonstrate solving a Hungarian cube with his eyes closed. The competition is recognized by the World Organization for Hungarian Cube. At the entrance to the hall there will be a display of special Hungarian dice from around the world.
Another competition, open to the general public, is a special, multi-player simultaneous chess game, conducted by Deputy Master Vladimir Pivnik.
Nanocomics and animation
The "Nanocomics" series - science comics for children from the creator of the Weizmann Institute of Science - presents scientific plots based on real questions being investigated by the institute's scientists. The heroes of the series are involved in a variety of scientific adventures that take place at the forefront of research. In the workshops, the participants will hear a short scientific explanation, and will be invited to create a scientific comic. The workshops will be guided by comic artists Yaniv Shimoni, Meir Goldberg, Nosko and Amos Allenbogen, together with scientists from the Weizmann Institute of Science. An exhibition of posters of "nano-comics" stories will be shown there, and life-sized figures of the superheroes will be placed.
In the animation workshop, visitors will be able to create an animation film and watch it using the zoetrope wheel - which illustrates the secret of the illusion of movement.
plays and performances
A large variety of shows for the whole family will be presented in the halls of the institute. The "engineer of thoughts", the magician Lior Manor, will present a show of scientific magic; The show "Magic and illusions in the cinema" will present the behind the scenes of the world where everything is possible; The fun and magic of science will be demonstrated by Dr. Moshe Rashpon, the founder of the Science Garden and the Science Festival, in the "Physics in Fun" show. "Full of air - but fragile" is a hot demonstration in real time of blowing glassware for use in the laboratory, in art, at home and in industry, which will be demonstrated by Danny Notman, a glassblower from the Weizmann Institute of Science; and the theater-science presentation "Why is Atom?!".
There will also be open shows by local ensembles: displays of sculptures and live signs, a dance performance by the "Hadari Rehovot" band, and musical concerts, courtesy of the Rehovot Municipality.
Rabbi-sheikh, lectures and experiments
On the two evenings of the festival, scientists from the Weizmann Institute will talk about current issues from the front of science. The rabbis that will take place on the first evening will present various aspects of the most wonderful machine of all - the brain: Dr. Nahum Ulanovsky will explain how bats remember the way to a distant cave; Dr. Tali Kimchi will explain what the brain tells us about differences between the sexes. The debate that will take place on the second evening of the festival will deal with the ever-tightening relationship between doctors and mathematicians and physicists: and will describe the use of computational methods for the discovery and development of new drugs.
As part of the "Science Seekers" activity, lectures, workshops and scientific experiments intended for science seekers will be held at the Davidson Institute complex. Short popular scientific lectures will present current topics from the forefront of science: why cells kill themselves, what is nuclear fusion and what causes diabetes. Research students from the Weizmann Institute will bring innovations and news, offer a look into the future, and answer the audience's questions. Scientists from the "Teva" company will talk about the development of the "Copaxone" drug that was discovered at the Weizmann Institute of Science, representatives of the "Al-Op" company will present devices for night vision and an autonomous robot, the "Indigo" company will present advanced printing technologies, and the forensics department will tell how scientific methods help decipher crimes. Additional experiential lectures, accompanied by demonstrations, will deal with the scientific principles of music, and will explain how to prepare roasts in a dishwasher - alongside other patents from the molecular kitchen. In the institute's laboratories, participants will be able to participate in experiments such as making hand cream, and building and launching rockets.

The festival will be attended by scientists from the School of Nutrition in the Faculty of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences, and the School of Veterinary Medicine of the Hebrew University (Rehovot Campus), the Bloomfield Science Museum in Jerusalem, MedaTech - the National Museum of Science, Technology and Space, the Daniel and Matilda Recanati Center, Haifa, Ron Verdi Center for Nurturing Gifted and Outstanding Children, FIRST Israel Organization, the Museum of Man and Animals in Ramat Gan, the Makhmalyi Association - the Center for Research, Information and Assistance for Marine Mammals in Israel, the "Havida" Rehovot Center, the Green Trend, the Department of Forensic Identification, the company "Al- Op", the "Teva" company and the "Indigo" company, and the Lotem unit, the national information protection unit in the IDF.
