President Shimon Peres, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, is about to end his term in April, and so far most of the potential candidates to replace him are politicians: Robbie Rivlin, Binyamin Ben Eliezer, Dalia Itzik, David Levy and Natan Sharansky, now they are joined by an academic, 2011 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Prof. Dan Shechtman from the Technion.

The president is elected by the members of the Knesset in a secret ballot, but in order to be a candidate, the signatures of at least ten members of the Knesset are needed, and this may be his obstacle.

In an interview with the anchor of the weekly newspaper Ayala Hasson, which took place, as she admitted in the panel that took place after it, at Shechtman's initiative, he said: "I see myself as a presidential candidate." "I think I can change things for the better. Even now I do it, in many fields, especially in the field of education, higher education and technological entrepreneurship. I think that from the position of president, I can do much more." Prof. Shechtman also said: "I want to do good to the citizens of the State of Israel. There is much to be done in this matter. I am a Zionist. I want to create a generation of sociable people who see the needs of others."

For over 20 years, Prof. Shechtman has taught an entrepreneurship course open to undergraduate students at the Technion, and in one of his remarks about it, he said, "I implore my students - stop dreaming of an exit," he said. "Dream of establishing a company for generations, a large and developing company that will provide employment for many Israelis."

Another field in which Prof. Shechtman deals is teaching science to elementary schools, and these days he is filming a series for educational television in which he will present science lessons to first graders.

However, in the past he expressed himself in a way that would make it difficult for him to receive the votes of the ultra-orthodox Knesset members. at the conference "Pedagogy in the era of education" in 2011 Prof. Shechtman said, "There are big holes in the education system, not small ones. Half of the students in the State of Israel do not study core subjects such as mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry and English. This is a huge hole and a problem that the Israeli government must recognize. This injustice must be righted. Just as a parent who does not send his children to school must sit in prison."

Since 2000, Prof. Shechtman has been translating the Nobel Prize posters and sending them to high schools in Israel, but so far no student has seen them. The teachers are to blame. Not in the students - emphasized Prof. Shechtman.

In the past, two scientists have already served as presidents: the first president Haim Weizman and the fourth president Prof. Ephraim Katzir.

  1. I don't wish for a president like this who chases after rule and works in any way, even if it seems to be the case, in order to reach his goal which is now the presidency, he is not real, not worthy

  2. Professor Shechtman's willingness to present a presidential candidacy is wonderful news. The combination of a Nobel laureate researcher and a burning vision in his bones based on education and his drive, devoid of politics, puts all the other contenders far far behind him. I would say light years away. The other contestants would have done well if they had taken a step of magnanimity to clear the way for Prof. Shechtman from the evidence that we won. There are moments in a person's life and I would dare to say that in the life of a country and a nation, if we do not strike with the hot iron, we shall strike for sin, God forbid. Please don't get into the political quagmire with this coveted appointment. Successfully.

  3. Professor Schechtman makes an impression as a wonderful person, warm-hearted, a family man, loves humanity and certainly in this respect deserves the presidency. Another advantage that does not come from politics. But... nothing will help... Professor Shechtman must reveal his political views and must be in the center of the scale in order to be able to represent all the citizens of the country... it will be a disaster if it turns out after the fact that Professor Shechtman is at one of the ends of the scale.

  4. And in Google's translation:

    Yafim Siglov:

I appeal to all Russian-speaking citizens in the country, it's time to improve and radically restore the presidential message in our strane.Tolko is very educated, well-known and respected all over the world people will be able to unite our people together. Education and training for a new citizen, I think the main task of a future president. So to Dan Shechtman.

  5. I am addressing all the Russian-speaking citizens of the country - this is the time of improvement and fundamental restructuring of the presidency in our country. .Поетому я за Дана Шехтмана….

  6. Noble is nice, but does he have the balls to promote really urgent things? the canal of the seas? End of Bank "Israel"? An end to the endless corruption? Maybe even a little democracy? An energy autarkic economy? A local food farm? Hello? Privatization of public resources?
All this schmoozing with Shoi Olam only turns these people's heads up

  7. Professor Shechtman should explain how he is preparing to represent and defend the settlement policy, the land grabbing from the Palestinians. The other candidates don't have to, because they were partners

  8. Shouldn't he learn to kiss a sorcerer's cloak?
Or to honor "Baba" in his presence?
Or maybe to hang out with knowledge and superstitions?
    Throw candles into a bonfire?
    Or just wear amulets.

  9. An excellent and worthy candidate in all respects.
    The people's choice.
And we should organize with the help of the media on the issue, especially the internet and mobile in social and other organizations - to show the politicians that reason and common sense have power.

  10. Thanks to Prof. Shechtman for his willingness to run for the position
I hope that there will be more than ten brave members of the Knesset from the entire political spectrum who will sign and support Shechtman's candidacy
The man is worthy and suitable for a high position and the citizens of Israel deserve to have a president who does not come to the position from the political system and the work arrangement of politicians. We learned that Knesset members do not represent the will of the people and do not act according to the dictates of their conscience but according to exclusive interests

  11. I wish he would finally win and promote science in Israel, especially in the field of education of the younger generation.
