Adrian Nikolaev, 2004-1929 On August 11, 1962, when cosmonaut Adrian Nikolaev broke the record for staying in orbit in space (four days), the USSR rejoiced at the propaganda achievement in the space race against the USA. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev pulled off another propaganda achievement from Nikolayev when he forced him to marry the first cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova. The two had a daughter, but in 1982 they divorced.
