Ilana Smolyar, a graduate of the landscape architecture track at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Technion, won first place in the work competition of the American Association of Landscape Architects, for her thesis at the faculty. She planned a new tourist space on the Sea of Galilee that relates not only to the water line but also to the environment from a physical and mental point of view.
"Today, most of the regulated places for leisure and recreation are concentrated on the waterfront, which creates a lot of congestion on the beaches and does not allow the general public to enjoy the wide variety of landscape and cultural assets that exist in the area," she explains. "In my opinion, the essence of the Sea of Galilee consists of three layers: the reality, the history and the myth that embodies all the symbolic meanings of the Sea of Galilee. Therefore, the main idea in the project is to expose the historical and mythical layers of the Kinneret area alongside the realistic layer, and to present the area as multicultural."

The project offers a new planning approach to the Kinneret area, which will preserve and emphasize the existing landscape values, so that the surrounding area of Kinneret will be perceived and function as one cultural and scenic complex (which includes Lake Kinneret), and not just as a water line. This will reduce the pressure on the beaches and also enrich the visitor's experience.
Under the guidance and direction of the architects Amir Miller, Nava Regev and Anat Sade, Ilana Smolyar proposed a master plan for the development of the west coast, with an emphasis on the Ginosar valley. This area is agricultural in nature, and is currently facing major tourist development. It also has important cultural and scenic values and great pilgrimage value, since many of the stories of Jesus' miracles and journeys are related to it. She proposed a combination between the development of tourism and the preservation of the existing, alongside the exposure of the historical and mythical layers of the place. "The realization that it is impossible to chase the level and base the vacation on a water line only, together with the distinction of the need to bridge between the image of the Sea of Galilee and the reality - led me to the conclusion that the area designated for tourism and recreation, which today is mainly limited to the coastline, must be expanded," she says. "To this end, a wide variety of lodging and accommodation options must be developed based on the variety of scenic and historical assets that exist in the vicinity of the Sea of Galilee."

Three elements in the landscape that allude to the heritage of the past and which formed the basis for the planning are Ein Nun, Washington Avenue from the 20s, Villa Melchet and the surrounding historical garden. These are elements that build the identity of the place, therefore they serve as anchors in the planning of the space and receive a renewed function.
The planning of the space as a weave of historical sites, landscapes and vacation spots in combination with different axes of movement in the space, with each of them emphasizing a different facet of the Sea of Galilee - are the tools to create an experience of a place in the project. Thus the main axis of the project - the tourist promenade perpendicular to the water line, which will connect the main road and the Migdal settlement with the beach and "pull" the tourist construction inward into the valley. The vertical boardwalk will penetrate about half a kilometer into the water, in order to enhance the encounter between man and the water. It will be a floating pier that starts with an upper red line (-208.9) and ends with a lower red line (-215.00), illustrating the dramatics of the level change: the pier will rise in a rainy year and descend when there is no water. The columns on its sides, which will hold it up, will be in a uniform line when the Sea of Galilee is "full", will be exposed when the level drops and will illustrate to those walking on the pier the drop in the level. For the pilgrims this would be a metaphor for walking on water.
270 works were submitted to the competition from universities around the world, of which three works won first place in three different categories. Ilana Smolyar recently graduated with honors from the Technion and currently works at the "Tibi Architecture and Landscape" office in Haifa.

  1. The award certainly brings honor to the creator and the institution where she studied, but from the little that was illustrated in the article (an aerial diagram and a view from the shore to the Sea of Galilee) I see a serious damage to the blue landscape of the lake against the background of the Golan Mountains. On the other hand, you will see a straight and boring boardwalk like the one we see in coastal towns in the USA and ugly pickets that should remind us how far the Sea of Galilee has fallen this year. And the "believers" will have, as it were, a feeling of "walking on water". You just have to prepare a meal of bread and fish for them at the end...
Even in the aerial view, the straight path through the Palm Avenue stands out, such a linear path that stands in contradiction to the 'natural' and 'wild' landscape of the lake. Here, too, commercialization screams from afar. Isn't it better to lead the visitor on a winding path so that the arrival at the beach will be a surprise for him?
In short, over-development and sophisticated attempts to "design" the beach may destroy it and I hope that we will not be robbed of this beautiful piece as happened on the Corsi beach, on the other bank!

  2. To Ilana!
May your plans come true! well done !
Finally, maybe someone was born with a vision and a world view as it should be constitutionally that the shores of the Sea of Galilee between Haitar belong to the citizens and not to the invaders and property thieves.
Maybe this is where attention will begin to return the Sea of Galilee and its surroundings to everyone
residents of the country and there will be no need to pay for every step
In order to enjoy the beautiful things that have been taken from us over the years.
I hope that a leader will pick up the gauntlet and together give a shoulder in order to return this little piece of God to the citizens as a start!?

  3. Well done Ilana!!! Congratulations and good luck!!!
Don't listen to all the retards. They are dying of envy.

  4. Dear Ilana
You need one of these - a lot of innocence, hope and more hope, or simply not knowing the souls operating in our Bradakist countries. I believe in myself that it was a drill and nothing more. Perhaps when the Messiah comes, someone will think of your charming plan as feasible in this country that eats and devours the good in their various types and is an ultimate hunting ground for all the corrupt and speculators.

  5. To Ilana Smolyar

Well done for the beautiful froek and for winning the award.
The reality of history and myth as they are expressed in your work and in the execution methods of the project such as in the floating pier, which shows the water problem in the lake with the myth of Jesus walking on water.
And please, don't pay attention to the moral deterioration of a number of commenters on the site who don't know how to compliment a smart and beautiful woman.
You are a wise woman and in addition, you were also blessed to be a beautiful woman.

  6. To the two clowns above - if you want to know then the lady has a child who is several years older than you.

  7. hahahahaha.. look where we have deteriorated:
"She in the picture doesn't look bad especially if she's 35 like that...
Even if she looks boring in bed…”
We will make an agreement from now on not to talk about the appearance of 30+ girls so that the following discussions do not degenerate to the level of this discussion

  8. The one in the picture doesn't look bad especially if she's 35 like that...
Even if she looks boring in bed...

  9. Yonatan, what are you just crazy about?
I already said what I had to say.
    Go fuck you scumbag

  10. To the commenter who is not cool at all.

The lady in the picture is very beautiful.

I suggest you buy eyeglasses, unless you consider a common chimpanzee to be the epitome of beauty.

  11. I didn't mean to offend her, so I apologize for that.
I just wanted to draw Alon's attention to the fact that he devoted an entire response to nonsense.
What does it matter if Peretz said face or face?
Alon actually took this word and started to insert it. Peretz (what's the first name? I hate writing abbreviations) felt guilty about saying "face".

So while I was trying to show Alon that it doesn't matter at all what she looks like, I got a little carried away (as always)

  12. The first part of your response was objective and intelligent.
Unfortunately the second part is the worst and the most appropriate is for you to apologize for your words because there is no need to insult people even if they don't look like you.
See Alon Einini's response and it is neither offensive nor insulting
A spark of culture through land and respect in the end we will all benefit
    So have a nice evening

  13. Some other millionaire will now buy part of the Kinneret with dimes and make a fortune on it... a law should be passed that every tourist site opened by an external investor is obliged to give a percentage to the state or at least to the region/council in which it is located.

    Lalon:
Brother, take what you d. hard from my hands. Peretz (a.k.a. G. Yafit) said Aaliyah. You might think she is your friend or something.

Besides, she looks terribly old. What are these earrings?!? Even short hair that reaches the shoulders is not the best...

And Alon, her face is frowning

  14. d. breach

A face to live. A human being has a face.
Face is a very insulting word.
According to the response, I understand that you didn't mean it, but still...

Ilana has a face, a beautiful face.
And regardless of the face, kudos to her.

  15. You can see by her face that she is a neat and organized girl!
The question is whether an American investor will be found to take on the project!
For me, by the way, it's too neat, I like mazes and surprises and an organized mess...in architecture of course!!
