Gifted teenagers are more open to new experiences and show lower levels of anxiety compared to teenagers of the same age who are not gifted, according to a new study conducted at the University of Haifa. It was also found that the gifted are also less "pleasant". "Unlike in the past, the new studies in the field show that gifted teenagers show higher levels not only of cognitive intelligence, but also of emotional intelligence," said Prof. Moshe Zeidner, head of the Laboratory for the Study of Personality, Emotions and Personality Differences at the University of Haifa, who led the study.
While older studies in the field showed that gifted teenagers show lower levels of emotional characteristics, the new studies show that contrary to the stereotypes of withdrawn, shy and socially closed teenagers, the gifted show higher levels of various social characteristics compared to non-gifted teenagers. The current study, conducted by Prof. Zeidner together with Dr. Inbal Shani-Zinovich, sought to deepen the knowledge on this subject, while focusing on the Israeli research field. 374 gifted teenagers in grades 428-XNUMX who studied in special settings for the gifted and XNUMX non-gifted teenagers from the same age group and from the same schools participated in the study, with the study focusing on the accepted characteristics in the field related to differences in intelligence.
As mentioned, gifted teenagers showed higher levels of openness to experiences compared to their non-gifted peers. They also showed lower levels of anxiety and lower levels of neuroticism. Another trait that was tested is "pleasantness", a trait that is linked to characteristics such as honesty, altruism, trust, etc. Surprisingly, and in contrast to similar studies in the United States, the Israeli gifted youth showed lower levels of this trait compared to the non-gifted. According to the researchers, the drive for excellence and the high competitiveness of gifted teenagers may be what causes them to have this trait.
Contrary to the stereotype of the gifted teenager who is in emotional distress, no differences were found in the levels of distress and personal well-being between the two groups. According to the researchers, the gifted youth has a number of factors that can negatively affect his mental health, such as social stigmas, social pressure to succeed, disproportionate development between the emotional and cognitive aspects, etc., but at the same time, positive factors such as high cognitive ability, emotional stability, Effective strategies for dealing with problems, etc., which actually constitute "protective" factors that create emotional balance.
Another surprising finding was the lack of difference between the two groups in the level of conscientiousness. According to the researchers, this trait is related to achievement in studies and a high level of performance and is related to personality characteristics such as drive to achieve, efficiency, independence, etc. A possible explanation they give is that a high level of "conscientiousness" also causes those with lower intelligence to invest more and thus eventually reach high levels of achievement.

"Contrary to previous perceptions, this study reinforces the notion that high intelligence is an asset in dealing with life's challenges and is actually related to positive personal and social characteristics," the researchers concluded.

  1. one,

You write "the field of science threatens the patriarchal culture, because "the truth may yet be discovered"?

Can you explain what the connection is between the "patriarchal culture" according to you and science? And what threatens what? And what is the truth?

  2. Many of the gifted and geniuses are high-functioning Aspergers/autists.
The very fact that they don't have to deal with feelings of empathy all the time, including a whirlwind of emotions about the world, leaves them a clean and free space for obsessive pursuit in their field of interest. This is a rough generalization.
Even without "gifted" traits, any person who would invest in one field all of them - would become successful in that field.

Of course, if they are around people "of their type", their social skills also seem successful, because they don't have to deal with the whole mass of codes and nuances of the average public as well as individuals and others.

And who even determined that someone who excels in physics is a genius, even though when it comes to other areas (profession or intelligence) he is bad? While another person is average to very good in all fields, in all professions and has the ability to understand thousands of situations and people..but he is considered less gifted and maybe less smart..less good??

  3. Did all human development follow the breakthrough scientific development?
    No!
Part of human development came from breakthrough scientific development.
"Human development" in general is everything that opposes/conflicts with the common and main situation of the constant fighters against human development - which is the patriarchal culture that has been ruling for thousands of years.
The field of science threatens the patriarchal culture, because "the truth may yet be discovered".
So it is only part and not "whole".

  4. With all due respect, this researcher has no idea what emotional intelligence even means, apparently, but oh well

What is important here is that I am happy that in the Israel of 2011 they found so many gifted people and where they are they do not suffer a life of abuse which was not so acceptable until the early 2000s when I was still a student.

  5. S. All human development came as a result of the scientific development that broke the boundaries.
Therefore, those who have special abilities such as cooking good food or playing good music, it is nice, and it mainly benefits humanity by giving those pioneers something to have fun in their free time.

  6. No intention of being a troll. There is no doubt that there are gifted people in many fields including sports, art, acting and even leadership and the like.

Despite this, when we mean academic excellence, we mean excellence in real professions and not excellence in professions in which the employed are unable or unwilling to deal with real professions just as we are interested in the NBA champion and not in who won the district championship of the Division B of the Job Places League.

  7. Daniel, not all the gifted are gifted specifically in the mathematical and real fields. There are also gifted people in the humanistic, artistic fields and so on. This is also a stigma.

  8. Again, following the previous comments -
Bone is being in society, it is studying and practicing laws and rules of society and human behavior. Just like a non-religious person who visits the synagogue has no idea what they are doing because he does not know the rules of the place, so a person who is not a part of society on a regular basis, has no idea what is being done...there is no approach...how to speak...what to say...and what to answer. Because he doesn't know the rules of the game. And even if he knows, his knowledge is theoretical and degenerate and he is unable to use it in real time.

  9. Following on from the previous comment -
In short, physics is very important, but it is equally important (for social success and personal happiness) to play soccer with the guys, not to avoid social gatherings (even if the "intellectual level" is not high), and to talk...and participate...and be involved all the time.

  10. The high intelligence of the geek gives him the ability to understand in fields such as mathematics and science, which makes him love these fields and engage and delve into them when most of his peers, due to their lower intelligence, have difficulty in them and therefore dislike them.
This situation causes the gifted person to spend a lot of time in seclusion and solitude in order to delve into the objects of his love, which causes him to distance himself from society (which also sees him as a strange type who is interested in boring fields, and she also distances herself from him) and the degeneration of social skills.
This is my opinion, and there are always exceptions who knew how to combine the two.

  11. They studied in classes for the gifted, which reduced the friction and mental wear and tear resulting from the differences between them and their normal peers. In the past it was not like that.
