Long espresso, with two nanotechnology spoons

Nanometer-sized silver ions in the coffee machine will fight bacteria

Nanotechnology is considered the "next big thing" in the field of scientific innovation, and Shimon Peres already envisions the microscopic robots that will travel through our bloodstream and protect us from disease. It may sound like science fiction, but today you can already purchase the first household products that make daily use of nanotechnology for everyday household purposes. The first filter of nanotechnology products for the home is the revolutionary primea coffee machine, which uses silver ions a few nanometers thick to prevent the accumulation of bacteria and viruses in the milk ducts of the machine.

Many science fiction books already describe the sophisticated nanotechnology machines of the coming years - an invisible robotic wasp that would practice following terrorists in dark rooms, artificial white blood cells that would attack unidentified bacteria and viruses, and even robotic nerve cells that would allow the blind to see, the deaf to hear and the paralyzed to walk.

But until that happens, you can make do with a coffee machine in which the milk does not miss. According to the company's representatives in Israel, primea is the first coffee machine in the world that uses nanotechnology to prevent the accumulation of bacteria, viruses and bacteria that are typical of the pipes that carry milk in other coffee machines. Microscopic silver ions, a few nanometers thick, sail through the system that conducts milk inside the machine and paralyze the enzyme used to exchange oxygen in the bodies of bacteria, viruses and fungi. Killing the harmful bacteria, apart from its health importance, also prevents the milk from curdling and coagulating in the tubes. Silver ions are considered lethal to microbes because the latter have difficulty developing immunity to them.

"In the past, they used to put a silver coin inside the milk jug to keep it from going sour. The previous coffee machines required frequent cleaning of the parts that come in contact with the milk to prevent the accumulation of sour milk lumps and bacteria. The primea actually applies ancient knowledge through futuristic technology in order to solve a problem that exists in the present. ” says Ofir Primer, VP of Marketing of the Coffee Club, importer of the machine.

The parts that come in contact with the milk in primea are wrapped in a microscopic layer, where the silver particles are smaller than 50 nanometers in order to maximize the utilization of the surface area for the maximum production of silver ions and prevent parts from being left uncovered in the tubes.

"The silver particles do not corrode in contact with water, so maintaining the machine does not affect their efficiency. The silver ions are defined as lacking any toxicity according to the FDA test, the American Food and Drug Administration, therefore their use is a technological leap that allows greater hygiene in the dairy industry in general and coffee machines in particular. " adds Ofir Primer, the marketing VP of the coffee club.

However, for those who want to run to the store and buy the machine that also makes coffee, you should take into account a small detail, the price of the machine, 10,000 shekels.

  1. A similar thing exists in a number of Samsung products that were released a year or two ago, such as a washing machine, air conditioner and refrigerator that also contain silver ions for purification.

To Moshe, as far as I know the innovation is in the size of the silver particles and their integration in the devices. and hence the use of the term nanotechnology in relation to them.

  2. Silver ions have been used for years to prevent the accumulation of germs and disinfect. A few years ago I bought a portable water purification device that contained silver ions.
What's new here? "Nano technology", Elek.
