Multiple sclerosis is the most common cause of neurological disabilities in young people. While the accepted and main goal of stem cell transplantation is to renew the pool of myelin-producing cells and the envelopes of the nerve cells in the brain, this time the use of the stem cells was done with the aim of suppressing the inflammation. In this study, neural stem cells derived from embryonic stem cells were transplanted into the brains of mice with multiple sclerosis. The transplanted human cells merged in the brains of the mice and migrated towards the foci of inflammation. The cell transplantation suppressed and reduced the inflammatory process in the brain and thereby protected the animals from major damage to the myelin and nerve fibers, which are the pathological hallmark of multiple sclerosis. At the same time, the signs of the disease were significantly reduced in the transplanted animals. The results of the study were published in early September 2008 in the scientific journal PLoS ONE.

The research is the result of a long-term collaboration between Prof. Tamir Ben-Hur, director of the neurology department and Prof. Binyamin Raubinoff, director of the Center for Fetal Stem Cell Research at Hadassah. Also, Michal Aharonovich and Dr. Ofira Einstein from Hadassah and Prof. Hans Lassmann from the University of Vienna participated in the study. The researchers believe that the encouraging effects on the course of the disease obtained in animal transplantation will pave the way for further developments towards clinical trials. In addition, the researchers anticipate that the effect of transplantation on the suppression of inflammation, demonstrated in this study, will be combined in the future with the use of embryonic stem cells for the purpose of repairing and renewing the myelin in the brain.

The Selcure company, which is a subsidiary of Hadassat (Hadassa's technological application arm), will promote the application of the findings of this research towards the clinical trial phase, which is planned to begin in about three years.
