The move to eradicate the dangers of plastic bags, led by the Minister of Environmental Protection MK Amir Peretz, is moving to the Knesset. In the coming days, the Ministry of Environmental Protection will distribute a memorandum of law to receive comments from government ministries regarding the ban on the free distribution of plastic bags. In order for the consumers not to be the ones who are harmed by the king, at the beginning of the move reusable baskets will be distributed to the public for free which will serve as a substitute for the disposable plastic bags. The baskets will be distributed with the financing of the marketing chains that each year spend about NIS 80 million on the plastic bags. Today, this expense is "passed on" to the public in the prices of the various products.

Before the free distribution of disposable bags is banned, Israeli citizens will receive reusable baskets free of charge. These baskets were designed and designed by a designer hired by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

The new law stipulates that a levy of 60 cents will be imposed on each disposable bag. The funds collected for this sale will go to the cleaning fund and will be used to establish infrastructure and recycling facilities, treatment and rehabilitation of waste hazards, recycling education and more. According to the proposal, bags that come into direct contact with bulk food, such as vegetables and grains, will be exempted from the law, as is the case in European countries. The amount of the levy is the minimum price for the consumer that is found to be effective in creating the required behavior change. Fines of 20,000 to 60,000 shekels will be imposed for violating the law. The move will be accompanied by a public campaign to prevent the use of plastic bags.

When Minister Peretz took office, he announced that one of the main tasks he would face was handling the plastic bags. Minister Peretz met with the managers of the marketing chains, informed them of his intention and since then additional meetings have been held between them and the management of the ministry. According to surveys conducted by the ministry, more than 70% of the public supports stopping the distribution of free plastic bags. The average Israeli consumes about 275 plastic bags a year. A quarter of all bags are thrown into the trash immediately after use and remain for hundreds of years in waste sites until they decompose. A large part of the bags result in damage to the open areas and the pollution of the urban space, nature reserves, the beaches and the sea itself. Many animals in Israel (mainly the goat population) are injured as a result of eating the bags. About 100,000 sea urchins die every year in the world as a result of swallowing plastic bags. In addition, the plastic bags are made from oil and their wasteful consumption causes an additional need for oil reserves, the search for which is harmful to the environment and their production is polluting.

  1. http://www.atzuma.co.il/plasmas In my opinion, the whole subject of our consumption needs to undergo a change, and it may be that what will lead to this is also the tax on the bags.
In Israel, tons of food are thrown in the trash every day, because people buy more than they need, and just throw it away.
It is a chain of actions that should receive a more generous consciousness than any of us. You bought more, took more plastic bags, threw away more, used more garbage bags, created more garbage. Nothing comes from a source and everything goes somewhere.

Attached is a petition, in my opinion it is important to continue to work in favor of minimizing the use of bags.
    Thanks.

  2. Someone who understands
You say "bags are bad" and you say "a substitute for bags is bad". Do you have something good to say?

  3. Don't let them work on you!!!!
Apparently someone close to the minister or in his vicinity made a deal with the manufacturers of the fabric baskets "These baskets were planned and designed by a designer hired by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
And regarding the oil: in addition, the plastic bags are made from oil and their wasteful consumption causes an additional need for the oil reserves, the search for which is harmful to the environment and their production is polluting.
Don't let them work on you because the plastic bags are made from polyethylene which is a gas created during the refining of oil and in the past caused great environmental damage until they started using it for the plastic industry in the world

  4. I'm in favor of stupid people paying for their stupidity and lazy people paying for their laziness. I also worry about my children's future.
It's a shame that all many people are interested in is stroking their pink bottoms.

  5. Someone is trying to cut us a coupon. Sounds like lobbyist work.
No wonder it comes from a low-level person who represents everything that is bad in our politics, a cynical businessman who jumped way above the navel.

  6. Even if we use cloth bags, we will still have to buy many more garbage bags than before. And just as not everyone recycles bags, there will also be many who will not bother to deal with cloth bags, and will pay for new ones. Even if it is not a large amount, it still makes me angry that laws are enacted that work economically for the benefit of those who don't really need help (and I don't think it's a coincidence, by the way)

  7. Too bad
It's a shame….. 🙂 Many bags have holes and are not suitable as garbage bags. And in any case, the amount of bags in use is much more than what can be consumed as garbage.

There is no intention here to enrich the supermarkets!! There are reusable cloth bags. I know chains in the world where there are no bags at all, not even with money. Everyone brings their cloth bags. What's the problem with that?

  8. We have not been buying garbage bags at home for years. All supermarket bags are recycled as garbage bags in all bins at home.
Now we will also have to start purchasing them with full money, and in practice our consumption of bags will not decrease either...
As long as there is no practical substitute for garbage bags, I think it would be better if they invested in education for the recycling of the bags, instead of "fining" the public and enriching the supermarket coffers. Just a miss.
