Kurt Vonnegut, the satirical writer and playwright, passed away. Vonnegut, the American writer whose books include bestsellers such as "Slaughterhouse 5" and "Cat's Cradle" was found dead tonight in his apartment in New York at the age of 84 on 13/4/07.
Vonnegut was born in 1922 to a German immigrant family in Indianapolis. Vonnegut joined the American army during World War II and participated in combat in Europe. There she was captured by the German forces and held together with another group of prisoners in a slaughterhouse in the city of Dresden. He later said that it was a defining event in his life and even based his successful book "Slaughterhouse 5" on the experiences from that time. After the war, Vonnegut returned to the USA and specialized in anthropology at the University of Chicago. At the same time he started working as a reporter and public relations person. And in 51 he published his first novel.

Kurt Vonnegut is considered one of the most prominent writers in modern American literature. His writing was full of cynical humor and delusions of doubt fantastic book biographies. His books were also full of colorful characters and especially black humor. But his books were mostly full of social criticism. All these vehicles made him a favorite of America's revolutionary students in the 60's and 70's. He wrote his book "Slaughterhouse 5" in part about his experiences from World War II, but as a counter to the war waged by the USA in Vietnam at that time. The book that illustrates the horrors of war in a humorous and shocking way at the same time.
The book became an overnight bestseller and was followed by a controversy that caused it to be banned from schools and public libraries.

In 2005 Vonnegut published his last book "A Stateless Man" and soon Zamora Beitan Publishing plans to publish "Slaughterhouse 5" in a new translation.
