The Union of Kibbutz Industry started a process to upgrade production in the traditional industry factories in the kibbutzim with the help of nanotechnology. As part of the project, conducted under the leadership of INNI - the Israeli Nanotechnology Initiative, the Chief Scientist at the Ministry of Economy - from R&D and Magnet, links are made between academic researchers in the field of nano and collective enterprises, so that the latest technology will lead to a significant improvement in the properties of the products.

The term nanotechnology refers to materials at the tiny size level of a nanometer, the billionth of a meter. The high level of precision results in improved products and increased competitiveness against other manufacturers abroad.

According to the CEO of the Kibbutz Industry Association, Udi Orenstein, nanotechnology is a growing industry in the world and in Israel, the application of which in many cases leads to a leap forward in the activity of industrial plants and to produce raw materials of maximum quality, precision, strength and suitability for their use. It is estimated that most industries will incorporate nanotechnology in the production process.

Over the past few years, the number of researchers in Israel in the field has increased significantly. Israel has become one of the leaders in the world in the field of research and is in the stages of assimilating the technology in industry. The sector where there is less assimilation, and the technology has not yet realized its potential, is the sector of traditional industry, which makes up about 35% of all industry in Israel. The purpose of the program is to realize the great potential in the field of nanotechnology in the kibbutz industry.

The program, managed by Rafi Koriat, is intended for factories in the fields of plastics, energy, automobiles, water, textiles, polymers and others with great development potential, with priority for factories in the periphery. In the first stage, the main parameters are examined, a change in which can significantly upgrade the company's products, a mapping and examination of the existing capabilities will be carried out, the existing barriers against market needs and future potential will be characterized, and goals will be defined to be achieved. After completing this step, an appropriate research plan will be drawn up.
