Two Israeli researchers from the Sea and Lake Research Institute in Haifa, yesterday won second place and a commendation, for photographs of jellyfish taken by the two. This is as part of an international competition held by the International Organization for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The topic of the competition was species that moved from their natural habitat and invaded other areas. The jellyfish that reaches the shores of Israel belongs to the category of "species that abandoned their natural habitat". The jellyfish familiar to Israelis is of the "wandering string" species - and it reached the Mediterranean Sea and the shores of our country through the Suez Canal.
Professor Bella Galil won second place in the international competition - for a photo she took of jellyfish found in a fishermen's net. The researcher Mel Cooper also won a commendation within the competition for a beautiful photograph of a jellyfish in the water.
