A new international venture in the field of the dissemination of academic knowledge, for which Bar-Ilan University will be responsible, will allow the exposure of all research written in Hebrew, in the fields of law, humanities, society and Judaism to interested parties around the world
Bar Ilan University recently signed an agreement with the Social Science Research Network (SSRN) to establish a Hebrew edition to distribute abstracts in Hebrew and English for studies written in Hebrew in the fields of law, social sciences and humanities. The new service will be added to the international database which currently contains approximately 250,000 articles and 370,000 Abstracts of articles.
For this purpose, a website will be established that will appear under the name of Bar-Ilan University as the sponsor of this service and will include the electronic journals (e-journals) in the various fields of knowledge that will be distributed to all those interested, as is currently accepted in the service provided in the English language and other foreign languages.. The editors of the journals The e-mails on the new site will be appointed by senior officials from Bar-Ilan according to the relevant disciplines.
Prof. Aryeh Reich, dean of the Faculty of Law, one of the initiators of the project said that "the fact that it will be possible to distribute and upload to the website also English abstracts for studies written in Hebrew, will greatly help to expose these studies outside the borders of Israel, especially in areas where many important studies are written in Hebrew, such as Jewish studies, Israeli law And Hebrew, Israeli history, Israel's economy and more." Prof. Reich added that "this agreement was signed following very long negotiations and thorough work that lasted about 3-4 years".
Prof. Reich thanked Prof. Oren Perez, the originator of the idea who worked alongside him to implement it during this entire period, Hanan Mendel who helped with the many technological aspects that arose during the work with SSRN, as well as Prof. Benny Lauterbach and Dr. Eyal Yaniv from the School of Business Administration who entered as partners in the project on behalf of the university and will share the costs of the project with the Faculty of Law. Prof. Reich emphasized that he is convinced that this project will greatly contribute to the advancement of research and will also add to the university's reputation as a leading research institution in Israel and around the world.
The project will go live within six months.

It seems to me that the idea is to also make what is written in Hebrew available to non-Hebrew speakers: that is, to upload articles in Hebrew with a summary in English, which will allow researchers abroad to sort through articles that interest them and then delve more deeply into them and take care of their translation. It is much more efficient to write summaries than to translate thousands of articles that you don't know if anyone will use them.

I don't know... I don't think so. Articles should be written in English and then, if desired, publish a Hebrew translation of them. It does not make sense to budget for academic research only for the limited population of people who know Hebrew in the world. The project may be good for Hebrew speakers, but it seems to me that a stronger project would be to simply translate these articles into English (initially as a request from the original authors and then in order of priority determined by the scientific value of the article and how important and groundbreaking it is).
Science should be written in a language that everyone understands and everyone understands English. Both in Israel and abroad. At least the scientific community - which is also the relevant community. Only then is it recommended, if you have the strength and the audience, to publish in Hebrew to increase the circle and exposure.
