The State of Israel yesterday (Thursday) passed the most significant stage in the acceptance process towards final candidacy for the CERN particle accelerator project.

A few months ago, a Ramat Derg delegation from CERN visited to examine whether Israel deserves to be admitted to the project. As part of this visit, the delegation also met with the Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Daniel Hershkowitz, and their recommendation was unequivocal.

Therefore, today it was decided on five countries, which deserve to join the project and Israel is one of them. The decision, which must be passed unanimously, was initially opposed by the host country, Switzerland, which later withdrew its objection. Already today, Israel is a senior scientific colleague in the project.

Israel is now entering the final phase, in which the CERN CEO will begin final negotiations for Israel's admission to the project. This phase, which is essentially technical, may last about two years.

  1. Many Israelis will be surprised to hear this, but the Swiss are among those who give Israel the most trouble on the international level. They have extensive economic ties with the Iranians.

  2. I wonder what its effect is on "the fabric of time. space" - tin, I wish I knew what I'm talking about...

  3. Sorry, I don't understand the matter - after all, the project was shut down for a whole year not long ago. Is Israel added to a project that is not active? Sounds like a joke at best.

  4. Tomer, it must have been a political matter. Because from a scientific point of view, Switzerland has an interest in adding as many countries as possible to the project and becoming a world center in the field. This contributes to it at the educational-scientific level and indirectly also at the economic level.
