The Israeli Space Agency will cooperate with the United Nations Office for Space Affairs

The Israel Space Agency in the Ministry of Science signed an agreement today for cooperation on civilian space issues with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). The agreement was signed as part of the Israeli Space Week events by the head of the United Nations Office for Space Affairs, Prof. Simonta DiFipo and the director of the Israel Space Agency, Menachem Kidron, and in the capacity of the director general of the Ministry of Science, Peretz Wezan.

The signing of the agreement will grant Israel official membership in the UN Committee on Space Issues, will allow the participation of Israeli experts in the sub-committees, leading and participating in innovative projects with a global impact. Among the specific areas in which the Israel Space Agency will cooperate with the UN office: navigation satellites, communication satellites, space education, Earth observation satellites in cases of natural disaster, as well as space policy and regulation. For example, as part of the "Spider" initiative in the event of a disaster, Israel will provide information from its satellites if necessary to disaster areas and will broadcast real-time images that will help the forces on the ground.

The United Nations Office for Space Affairs deals with cooperation between countries in the use of space and technology for the benefit of development and coordination, deals with transnational issues such as waste in space, space exploration, global planning, defense against asteroids, establishing rules of ethics for the behavior of countries in space, regulation of sending satellites into space, and more . The organization serves as the secretariat of the UN Committee for Cooperation in Space for Peaceful Purposes (COPUOS) and has a center for space applications to impart knowledge in the fields of space with an emphasis on assistance to developing countries.
