The Islamic Republic of Iran launched a monkey into space in a life-sustaining capsule in preparation for launching humans into space. This is what the Iranian English-language television network Press TV reports.

The capsule, known as Fishgam (Pioneer) was launched on Monday as a surprise gift for the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. The place of the launch was not disclosed, it was only known that the monkey returned safely (probably by parachute) after reaching a height of about 120 kilometers inside the rocket. Iran has already sent animals into space - in 2010. They were a mouse, a turtle and worms. In 2011, they first tried to launch a monkey, but the launch failed and the monkey perished.

About two weeks ago, on January 15, the director of the Tyrian Space Agency (ISA - it's interesting that they call it the same name as the Israeli Space Agency) Hamid Fazli said that due to the similarity between humans and monkeys, a monkey was chosen for the space program.

Fazli announced that the plan to send animals into space is part of a larger project to send humans to space missions. He also added that the first Iranian manned flight will be launched within 5-8 years.

Fazli also added that Iran's self-made satellite, Sharipsat, will be placed in orbit towards the end of the Persian year - that is, until March 20, 2013.

Iran launched its first independent satellite Omid (Hope) in 2009. In 2011, it placed the Rasad (observation) satellite whose mission was to photograph the Earth and transmit the images to the ground stations as a response to the Israeli Horizon satellites.

On February 2, 2012, Iran launched the Nabid Elm or Sanat satellite - the harbinger of science and technology. The satellite was a communication satellite, measurements and scientific applications, and served scientists in many fields.

PRESS TV states that Iran is one of the 24 founders of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in 1959. They just don't mention that the regime then was not Islamic.
