Intel and Cray will build the world's most powerful supercomputer for the US government

The establishment of the computer, "Aurora: is part of the initiative of the US Department of Energy to install sophisticated supercomputers in three national laboratories of the Ministry - Argon, Lawrence Livermore and Oak Ridge - with the aim of establishing the leadership of the USA in scientific research and placing it at the forefront of the next generation of computing.

Intel will provide the US Department of Energy with the most powerful supercomputer in the world - "Aurora". The system, which is being built in collaboration with the supercomputer manufacturer Cray, will be handed over to the American government in 2018.

The new supercomputer will offer peak performance of 180 petaflops (FLOPS). 1 peta = million gigabytes; Flops is a unit of measure for the power of computers dealing with computationally intensive processing, and in particular scientific processing, where floating point commands are widely used. This is five times higher performance and more than the most powerful computer operating today.

The "Aurora" will be based on a high-performance computing framework made by Intel and the next-generation "Shasta" supercomputer made by Cray. The contract is part of the US Department of Energy's initiative to install sophisticated supercomputers in three of the ministry's national laboratories - Argon, Lawrence Livermore and Oak Ridge - with the aim of establishing US leadership in scientific research and placing it at the forefront of the next generation of computing.

The computer will be based on Intel Xeon processors and Intel Xeon Phi processors (code name Knights Landing). The most powerful computer in the world today is the Chinese Tianhe-2, built in 2013 and providing raw processing power of up to 33.96 petaflops. When the Aurora becomes operational, three years from now, it is expected to be the fastest computer ever built.

The US government banned Intel from supplying chips to Chinese supercomputers

The United States government banned the companies Intel and Nvidia from supplying chips to four Chinese supercomputer centers. The ban was explained by the fear that the computers operating in these centers - Tianhe-2, considered the fastest supercomputer in the world, and Tianhe-1A, ranked 17th in the world - are being used for nuclear experiments. Both supercomputers are equipped with Intel Xeon processors. Intel's Xeon Phi accelerators are also installed in the Tianhe-2 and graphics accelerators made by Nvidia are installed in the Tianhe-1A.

In February, the United States Department of Commerce added the four Chinese supercomputer centers: the National University of Defense Technology of China, the National Supercomputer Center in Changsha, the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou, and the National Supercomputer Center in Tianjin, to the list of companies that work against the interests of foreign policy. foreign affairs or national security of the United States.

The list is compiled by representatives from the Departments of Commerce, State, Energy and Defense of the United States administration. In some cases, representatives from the Treasury Department of the United States also participate in compiling the list.

  1. Americans are addicted to cheap credit (it seems that $18,000,000,000,000 in debt is not enough for the American government and it must break its own record, see you in the next and last crisis 🙂

I'm fine, hard worker 🙂 how are you?

I think like you. I don't think we have the faintest idea how we solve such things. Once you have solved one such exercise, you develop a new ability to solve similar puzzles. You also really enjoy finding the solution, and that seems to me to be an important element...

  3. So it sounds like it is even faster than you thought... because it is written that its speed will be 180 peta-flops. So how many times faster is it than the computer they asked about in the first message?

  4. Yes, I was wrong. I thought the speed of the new computer was 34 peta-flops. This is the speed of the previous fast computer…

  5. “The number of 30 peta-flops is wrong…. and therefore you are right"

I didn't understand miracles, where did you get the number 30? He does not appear in the article.

And what do you mean he is right? Isn't it 1500 times faster? were you wrong

  6. Yossi Simon
Besides you are right - all you need to know is the speed in flops. A 30 petaflop computer is 1500 times faster than a 20 teraflop computer. But the 30 peta-flop number is wrong…. and therefore you are right.

  7. Hello miracles!
It is not clear where you deduced that the speed is 1500 times faster? What is specifically stated is the size of the memory space, there is no detail about the FLOAT POINT commands, how many bits one command contains and what the SET commands beyond addition/multiplication in the context of floating point, which the computer is capable of performing. And another priest and priest.

  8. interesting. I already thought that the Kray company no longer existed. Since the Cray man was killed in a car accident about 20 years ago I haven't heard anything about the company.

  9. Husham, they can simulate the explosion of an atomic weapon, without detonating a bomb. They can predict processes to design weapons,

  10. IBM had a supercomputer a few years ago that was able to calculate:

"machine that can handle 22.8 trillion operations per second"

Can anyone help me calculate how much faster the computer in question should be?

    Thanks.

  11. What do they need 5x processing power. What are they doing with her?
that they didn't do in the old power.

Google is growing at such rates and maybe they need the computers.
    But the Ministry of Defense?!

  12. In short, all the prairies were in the breached cloud, the Americans are keeping their cards close to their chest.
