"The smart home" - the Israeli aspect

Towards 500 million systems in the world in 2008: a conference on "communication in the personal space and the smart home" will be held in Tel Aviv in cooperation with the IEEE in June

Almost every Israeli citizen has a cell phone and half of the country's citizens surf the Internet, now it's the turn of the "smart home" - a system that links the means of communication, entertainment and security of the home, and enables their efficient operation from anywhere in the home and even outside it. In this way, the phone call will be able to reach us in any room where we stay, and the sounds of the music or the TV program will accompany us when we go out to the garden. This way we can also monitor the safety of the apartment at any moment, or the operation of the washing machine, and even verify from the car using the cell phone if we did turn off the gas before we left.

Broadband communication already reaches many homes today. The wide plasma screens and television-recording systems that are distributed to the public, together with the worldwide distribution of the Internet, focus many companies on the domestic market, and many modern apartments in the world already boast of dimming systems and the activation of an electronic change of the transparency of the windows, and even sophisticated systems for identifying those entering and leaving the apartment. Various companies have identified the kitchen as a center of activity for many hours a day, and therefore in many apartments around the world "online refrigerators" have already been installed, which serve as communication centers for receiving information and sending e-mail. The refrigerator computer can also report on the contents of the products, and even order missing products. One of the research companies predicts that in 2008 there will be close to 500 million networked multimedia systems in the world. In this context, there is a lot of interest in utilizing the existing power lines to transmit information.

A significant part of the activity in this innovative field is carried out by Israeli companies, some old and some start-up companies, which develop the electronic components and the operating software of the "smart home" systems. The latest communication technologies, and especially the entry into new frequency ranges for short-term communication needs, have opened up extensive possibilities for home wiring and linking many of the home devices to the Internet, for remote control and operation.

The electrical and electronics engineers in Israel are organizing a convention designed to present the technologies and applications that exist for the user's "personal space" to the professionals and the interested public. The conference was held in technical cooperation with the "Communications Union" of the IEEE world organization, whose president will come to Israel especially for the conference. Lecturers from the union will participate in the conference sessions and the conference will be co-chaired by the Israeli representative, Dr. Yaakov Baal-Shem, and the representative of the international union, Dr. Alex Gelman from the USA.
At the conference, which will be held on June 1-2, 2005 at the "Dan Panorama" conference center in Tel Aviv, the latest technologies used in the "Smart House" such as Bluetooth, WiMax, and VoIP will be presented. A guest lecture will present advanced applications utilizing the home electrical network to link the systems, and Israeli companies will present wireless applications and even demonstrate them. The conference will also deal with government and public policy related to the operation of communication systems in the personal space and the smart home and will even present the "smart car" system that is currently under development in the world.
