The Hebrew University will sign an agreement with the French research organization CNRS to establish a joint research laboratory

 As part of the ambition of the governments of France and Israel and the research communities of the two countries to increase scientific cooperation between them, an agreement will be signed between the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a French research organization and a binational scientific conference on neuroscience will be held.

The historic cooperation agreement between the Hebrew University and the National Organization for Scientific Research in France (CNRS) will be signed on Tuesday November 16, 2004 in a video conference call. As part of the agreement, an Israeli-French laboratory for neurophysiological and neurophysical research will be established.

The conference call will begin at 19:30 in room 3001 in the Rabin building on the Mount Scopus campus. The signing of the agreement was scheduled for 20:00. In Jerusalem, the president of the Hebrew University, Prof. Menachem Magidor, will sign the agreement; In Paris, the CEO of CNRS Dr. Bernard LeRotoreau, the President of the University of Bordeaux 2, Prof. Bernard Bagaud, and the President of the University of Paris 5, Jean-Francois Dienot, will sign.

The ceremony in Jerusalem will be attended by the management of the Hebrew University as well as public figures and non-governmental organizations, among them: the French ambassador to Israel Gerard Arou, the scientific attaché of the French embassy Dr. Jean-Christophe Opry, the cultural attaché of the French embassy Dr. Tobi Natan, director of the center The French researcher in Jerusalem Prof. Pierre de Miroucheji, the representative of the Israeli Embassy in France M. Oren Bar-El, the head of international relations at the Ministry of Science and Technology Dr. Shlomo Sharig and the head of cultural and scientific relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rafi Schutz. Israel's ambassador to France Nissim Zvili will participate in the ceremony in Paris.

CNRS is a public institution for basic research with 26 employees, about half of whom are researchers, and 1,260 research and service units that mostly work in collaboration with higher education institutions and French research centers. The organization's budget for 2004 is more than 2 billion euros.

On Monday-Thursday, November 18-15, 2004, a French-Israeli binational conference will be held on the topic: "Multidisciplinary Approaches in the Study of Higher Brain Functions" at the Ma'ale Hamish Guest House. The conference is the largest French-Israeli meeting so far in neuroscience and will be attended by more than 70 scientists from research institutions in France and Israel. The conference will deal with memory and learning processes, sensory perception and movement control, with an emphasis on the integration of studies from various research fields including physiology, molecular biology, psychology, physics, mathematics and computer science.

The conference was sponsored by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology, the Hebrew University, the Weizmann Institute, CNRS and the French-Israeli Brain Research AssociationAFIRNe.
