During the coming weeks, a public awareness campaign will be held in Israel in preparation for Heart Health Day 2008, which will be celebrated in Israel and around the world on September 28 in all member countries of the World Heart Federation.

Prof. Basil Lewis, president of the Cardiology Association in Israel and director of the cardiology department at the Carmel Medical Center in Haifa, said ahead of Heart Health Day that "myocardial infarction is one of the main causes of death in Israel and in the world, every hour about 2 Israelis arrive at the hospitals due to a heart attack Acute in the heart muscle, it is about 50 patients per day, which is only the tip of the iceberg, because another 15 Israelis a month, do not get to go to the hospitals at all and die a sudden death even before help reaches them"

Prof. Doron Zager, Secretary General of the Cardiology Association, in Israel and Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit in the Cardiology Unit at Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva, added that: "One of our biggest awareness challenges is the need to shorten the time required for many patients to understand that they are having an attack heart and they should seek help. The main signs of a heart attack are severe chest pain, often radiating to the left arm, neck, jaw, back or upper abdomen. Other common complaints are sudden shortness of breath, severe weakness, fainting, nausea and vomiting."

In preparation for Heart Health Day, the Israel Cardiology Association will operate a telephone information center, toll-free, with the number 1800-53-53-53. The hotline will be staffed by the best doctors from all over the country, several times during the month of September, in an open line format in order to answer questions from the general public about the campaign's issues, including heart diseases.

As part of the campaign, a variety of activities will be held and messages will be delivered to the public, which will focus on the symptoms of heart attacks, increasing awareness of the time factor in myocardial infarction and the importance of early referral for help, the importance of a quick full ECG, a home ECG test that can be performed from anywhere, ways to prevent risk factors for heart disease, cholesterol reduction and smoking cessation, how can the implanted defibrillator save lives and prevent death from cardiac arrest which affects one person in Israel per hour and causes the death of approximately 8,000 Israelis per year and what are the difficulties that patients have to go through in order to receive it, the patient's rights after a heart attack and the advantages of telemedicine, which allows diagnosis and remote care.

  1. It is worth considering the fact that the symptoms of a heart attack vary from men to women, and that a heart attack can occur even without chest pain and be manifested by symptoms of weakness, shortness of breath and a general feeling of pressure in the chest and throat area that radiates to the jaws.

At the same time, these symptoms are also characteristic of other diseases such as diseases of the digestive system and in particular, stomach ulcers as well as anxiety attacks.

Basically, if there is a suspicion of a heart attack, although it is not necessarily one, it is better to go to the emergency room and not take a risk.

  2. Well, maybe this is our biggest weakness - the heart - and maybe our biggest strength,
In order to shorten queues..and overload the health systems, etc..etc..I would recommend it with moderate warmth..
    Sing..without a voice..within the heart..our special "anthem"...and listen to its words, inside..

  3. 50 per day is 1500 per month which is 18 thousand per year. If 8000 of them die that means 56% success. Together with those who do not get to get treatment it remains almost the same.

The article mistakenly states that the figure for the number of patients who come for treatment is the tip of the iceberg because 15 people a month don't even get to come for treatment. The mistake is verbal and it should be changed that the 15 that arrive are the tip of the iceberg (180 losses per year that do not receive treatment out of 8000 that fail to be treated)
