An earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale struck Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere on January 13, 2010. Haiti's Prime Minister said this morning that he estimated more than 5.9 dead, with many likely still trapped under the rubble. The earthquake was accompanied by a number of aftershocks, with a magnitude of 5.5 and XNUMX on the Richter scale.

The earthquake, described as the "most terrible" that has struck the region in the last 200 years, claimed the lives of tens of thousands of residents known so far (about 50 thousand), but the Haitian Prime Minister estimates the final number to be about 2004 thousand. Many more are believed to be under the rubble. As you remember, this order of magnitude approaches the order of magnitude of the victims of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in December 3 in the Indian Ocean and the Andaman Sea, which claimed the lives of about a quarter of a million people. About 10 million people, a third of Haiti's population, were affected by the earthquake, according to the Red Cross. About 2 million people felt the quake, and XNUMX million people felt strong shaking. Among the missing and injured are also thousands of UN envoys who were there with the aim of helping the country get out of the economic and political difficulties.

The shocked residents describe skies darkened by clouds of dust, and horrors on the streets. Hospitals are collapsing under the strain, and medical supplies are running out. The earthquake, which lasted more than a minute, destroyed many public buildings, including the presidential palace and several government offices.

US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that Washington would send military and civilian aid to Haiti. Obama even posted a call from the State Department for help locating missing relatives who were in the country at the time. And the UN sent immediate aid of 10 million dollars.

What caused the earthquake?

The source of the earthquake is in the rift that is under Haiti along the border between the Caribbean and North America. The tectonic plates are connected to each other like a puzzle in the shape of saw teeth and they are constantly advancing (about 20 mm per year) in a horizontal direction. The terrible earthquake was not the result of the shifting of the plates, but of the release of intense energy from the "Gan Enriquilo-Plaintain fault line", the dangerous fault line that is under Haiti.

In the past, scientific studies have been published that raise the high probability of a severe earthquake in the region.

  1. "Approximately 10 million people felt the earthquake" this basically means all the residents of Haiti

  2. Richard:
Have you read what I wrote?
    You understand?
If so, then it is clear to you that I did not recommend not to have children at all or not to have two and I only came out against the "procreation at any cost" described in a previous comment.
Therefore what you wrote corresponds to what I said and instead of "exactly the opposite" you should have written "exactly!"

  3. Michael, quite the opposite...
Take as an example the nations of South America.
One of the reasons why the Spanish were able to conquer easily was the bacteria they brought from Europe. The fact that the peoples of South America did not live very densely prevented the development of epidemics and so when the Europeans arrived, thousands died...

The chance of one continuing the generation, meaning that two will have two children, is not 100%... Young soldiers fall in battle before they have brought offspring into the world... Young drivers die on the roads...
Therefore, more than two children per family are needed.
    Although not necessarily 10...

  4. Bijumbom:
Sometimes "to give birth at any cost" is the cutting of the branch on which they are sitting.
This has happened to many cultures and it is expected to happen to populations in Israel who give birth at the expense of those who work.

  5. to the questionnaire
"The motivation to "live at any cost" or "procreate at any cost" sometimes
    Even worse than death..."
I think I understand your point (but that doesn't mean I agree with it)
In simple words, if everyone thought this way, I doubt if they would survive - from an evolutionary point of view -, and therefore there is no chance that everyone will think this way either. But from a "personal/egoistic" evolutionary point of view, it is good that you and as many as possible think and apply the above erroneous quote, Which means that it is a mistake on my part to tell you that you are wrong, although since we are all Jews and I am somewhat of an idealist, I allow myself to point out to you that you are wrong.
    Hope she understood.
There is a chance that you are misleading the institute, out of egoistic interest.
    Hope she understood.

  6. I'm just afraid of what will happen when a strong earthquake shakes the land of "building on pillars"...
Pay attention to the fact that in Israel they try to minimize and sweep under the carpet the damage caused by a strong earthquake.

Construction in Israel (especially buildings built in the XNUMXs to the XNUMXs) is not resistant to strong earthquakes.

It's a shame that instead of dealing with the issue and protecting the buildings, they simply ignore and barely report an earthquake here and an earthquake there, even though strong earthquakes occur every day in many parts of the world.

  7. The fact that there are too many people on the globe actually serves
interests of governments and economic entities, because "there is more
To whom to sell" and certainly these are not interested in downsizing.

Those who multiply fast are the weak strata who hope for their children
Salvation from poverty or that a large family is a guarantee of resilience
economic and social. While in practice entire generations are born straight to God
while the suffering of their parents. Few do find the way out
But most of them continue the tradition.

The motive of "living at any cost" or "giving birth at any cost" sometimes
Even worse than death... I don't mean Haiti. It's sad that it is.

  8. Ghost: And you bring it up on a reporter because?
It's not at all, we don't have the technology
Rebels from the planet Titan have apparently decided to take over Earth instead of trying
    change their planet
I was sent to warn you

  9. Perhaps Hoshem means that people in certain governments have managed to create technology that will allow them to control the climate to such an extent that they can cause tsunamis and earthquakes?

  10. There are probably too many people on the planet
And maybe there is someone who takes care of sifting some of them without wars
I wouldn't be surprised if the earthquake is caused
As a result of human intervention although also an earthquake
    is taken into account

  11. A shocking combination of poverty and natural disasters. Unfortunately they will die
Many who could have been saved after the earthquake due to shortages
With means of rescue, stockpiles of medicine and collapsed hospitals.

I was in an earthquake of 6.7 Richter but when a city of 12 million
Ish is prepared for this type of event and has been building for many years
According to strict earthquake standards, only 47 people lost
    their lives.
