The feminine power of medieval women

A new academic study claimed that female power existed and 'kicked' as early as 600 years ago

By Rona Harari, the scientist

Dr. Sue Niebrazidowski at Bangor University claims that medieval women enjoyed a 'golden age' when their life expectancy was longer than men's. "We found women who ran monasteries, ordered books and used 'tourist packages' for visits to the Holy Land," she says. She added that women protected their property and property rights. Dr. Nivarzidovsky's research involving menopausal women in the Middle Ages will be discussed at a conference at Bangor University this week.

As a medieval scholar at the Institute for Early and Modern Studies, she studied legal documents, literature and poetry in order to build a picture of women's lives in the 12th to 15th centuries. Dr. Niverzidovsky, whose research is funded by the Royal Historical Society and the British Academy, told the BBC website: "Women were mostly widowed around the age of 30 and this gave them extra independence. "They could be more free sexually as there would be no child to serve as proof of neophyte."

'Misconceptions'
"And if they were affluent, they could also enter the marriage market according to their terms - and according to their reasons, whether they were livelihood, love, friendship or pleasure."

The findings of the research will be reviewed in depth this week at a conference in Bangor in which some of the leading researchers in Britain will participate in the subjects of archaeology, history, languages and law. The conference, which will take place from Wednesday to Friday, will attract experts from the fields of literature, archaeology, art and history.

Dr. Niverzidovsky said: "We assumed that women in history had very little economic independence or social power and that they relied on their fathers or husbands for most of their lives.

"But we must be careful not to rely on too many misconceptions and assumptions about women in history. "While most of our information is taken from art, literature, or historical records that refer to wealthier women, menopausal women in the Middle Ages had much more power and independence than we imagined."
