The launch of the Galaxy IIIC, a Model 702 satellite manufactured by Boeing, scheduled for June 15, will mark the return to flight of the most powerful communication satellite with the highest capacity in the world.
Galaxy IIIC, the seventh in the Boeing 702 series of satellites, will be the first of this model to carry Boeing's new solar array technology.
The launch of the Galaxy IIIC will take place at 15:39 PST (18:39 EST, 22:39 GMT) from the equator on a Sea Launch rocket. The satellite will provide service to the US and Latin America and will add 77 broadcast channel capabilities to the PanAmSat Corp fleet, one of the largest geostationary satellite systems in the world.
This is the 23rd satellite built by Boeing and passed by Pan-Am-Sat in the last twenty years. The satellite was built by "Boeing Space and Communications" (S&C), a division of Boeing Co.
"We have complete confidence in the quality and reliability of the Galaxy IIIC satellite," said Randy Brinkley, president of Boeing Satellite Systems, the satellite manufacturing arm of Boeing Space and Communications. "We are looking forward to the opportunity to demonstrate the satellite's on-orbit performance, which will prove to our customers that the Boeing 702 is No. 1 in the world in terms of reliability and flexibility and the cheapest satellite service per transponder.
"The new model of the solar array is a proven and reliable flat planar array that has served our customers faithfully for the past decade on Boeing 601 satellites," Brinkley added. "Besides the classic model, we have added strict quality standards based on 'Boeing's best work practices' that we have been implementing in recent months."
With a 15-year contract life, Galaxy IIIC will operate on C-band and Ku-band frequencies from its orbital position at 95 degrees west latitude. The extensive coverage area will provide Pan-Am-Sat with the flexibility to change its market layout accordingly. The satellite carries 24 C-band transponders and 58 Ku-band transponders.
Pan-Am-Sat Co., Ltd., located in Wilton, Connecticut, is a leading provider of global video and data transmission services via satellite. The company builds and operates its own networks, which transmit entertainment and information transmitters to cable television systems, television broadcasting subsidiaries, direct-to-home operators, internet service providers and telecommunications companies.
Sea Launch LLC, headquartered in Long Beach, California, is the only company in the world that provides sea launch services from the equator. The international partnership of Boeing (USA), Energy (Russia), Yuzhmash/Yuzhnoia (Ukraine) and Kvarner (Norway), provides reliable, cheap and high-performance dispatch services for commercial cargo in the range of 4,500 - 6,000 kg per -geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) with the Zenit-3SL vehicle. Galaxy IIIC is the seventh Boeing-made satellite to be launched by Sea Launch.
