Future directions in space

The former chairman of the Indian Space Research Agency laid out his vision for human expansion in space at the space conference in Hyderabad

Tal Inbar, Hyderabad

Space exploration in the last 50 years has brought great benefit to humanity directly and indirectly. Beyond the benefits produced in the field of communication, natural resource management and navigation, space exploration "ignited" and inspired people to learn more about the universe, the solar system and the origin of our planet: the Earth.

The future efforts in space will continue to provide humanity with great benefit and provided that they are directed and focused properly. In the next 50 years, the Earth will face alarming climate changes, the depletion of natural resources, and natural disasters. New space missions that deal with these issues should be planned so that the gaps in existing capabilities can be dealt with. At the national and global levels in dealing with the aforementioned acute problems.

Beyond that, the efforts in space will create more efficient and cheaper methods of space transportation, sensitive telescopes that will scan the universe in search of additional star systems and will enable the utilization of planetary resources. Dr. K. Castoringen, the former chairman of the ISRO and currently a member of the Indian Parliament touched on these issues from his knowledge and experience in managing space missions.

According to him, the unique tendency and trend of the human race to expand and explore the globe led to the connection and mixing of the different cultures that were originally isolated and scattered. What made this trend possible are the improvements and technological progress in the various transportation systems, beginning with the voyages of the ancient world waves and ending with the voyages into deep space. The geographical boundaries that we see from the earth are disappearing From the perspective of an observer from space.

It can also be expected that in the future human colonies will be settled in space that will maintain mutual ties between them and become independent and prosperous.

This effort is essential in order to ensure the survival of the human race on our small planet that may be threatened by an asteroid strike, global warming, invasion from space, etc.. Beyond that, these efforts will give birth to new economic opportunities and global partnerships.

In the last fifty years our understanding of the Earth has been significantly influenced by space. How many global environmental processes have been addressed with geospatial technologies? While issues related to water, food, health and education still need to be polished through space technology and recent developments to meet the growing needs of human society.

Improvements in space transportation will allow us access to the nearest stars and even to the planets beyond the solar system. Our progress and experience in space will lead to the first human colonies in the not too distant future. The aforementioned tremendous tasks require additional scientific treatment and improved international cooperation.

Our understanding of the moon, advanced studies of the sun and its relationship with our Earth system, the search for additional planets and galactic and extragalactic objects will allow us to achieve the goals mentioned in space exploration.

In the meantime, improvements and overcoming technical obstacles in regards to solar energy will enable an improved global energy economy. Space tourism will open up business opportunities that do not exist at present.

The key to the future of the human race is intrinsically linked to the conservation of our planet's resources and the exploration of space which in turn will bring the nations closer together through stimulation through technological and economic innovation.

  1. Although in the near term investment in the weak populations and the dwindling resources seems more worthwhile, but in the long term - the investment in space exploration has the highest potential for finding resources and ways of living for humanity in general and in particular for the weak populations - because this dilemma is actually the question - should we give the Earth's population fish or fishing rods?

  2. Establishing a colony in space, on the moon or on a space station, is worthwhile for the huge savings saved in raising transits to space in a place where gravity is significantly less or zero.
The meaning of earthing a planet like Mars for massive colonization and flying colonizers is often too slow and expensive to justify just for the problem of the dwindling resources we have here as a result of stupid use of raw materials.
It is easier to massively colonize our shrinking poles than to colonize a much colder planet with no oxygen or water (at least according to what is known so far).

  3. Who said we will survive in the long term outside the earth??? It is cheaper to deal with the pollution of third world countries (China, Russia, etc.) instead of fantasizing about a colony on Mars, which is an idea bordering on madness.

  4. What nonsense! Instead of investing resources in saving our poor ball we will fantasize about reaching other worlds?
