April 1 prank: Color changing eye drops

The special eye drops developed for the innovative treatment have RNAi molecules that interfere with the normal expression of the pigment and thus allow us to control the color of the cornea after a few weeks of treatment

On our Facebook page
We brought news regarding an innovative treatment called RNAeye, which is able to change the color of the eyes over time and reversibly. This is the first aesthetic treatment of its kind that uses inhibitory RNA technology (RNAi).

The principle of operation is very simple: the color of the eyes is dictated by coloring proteins also called pigments. In each person, the pigments are expressed in a different pattern that gives their eyes their characteristic color, so that in people with dark eyes the pigment is expressed to a high degree, while in light-eyed people, for example those with blue or gray eyes, the expression of the pigment is very low. For more information on creating the color in the eyes, see our article on the subject Why do babies' eye color change?..

The special eye drops developed for the innovative treatment contain RNAi molecules (see A video about RNAi) that interfere with the normal expression of the pigment and thus allow us to control the color of the cornea after a few weeks of treatment. The effect itself lasts as long as the treatment continues. The great advantage of this method is that it is reversible, so that when you stop taking the treatment, the delay in the creation of the pigment stops and the eye color gradually returns to its natural shade.

In the picture below you can see an example of the effectiveness of the treatment on people with different eye colors, so the maximum effectiveness is in the treatment of changing the shade to a deep blue. The company that develops the treatment stated that they are currently working on a similar technology that will allow the color of the skin to be changed as well.

For those who haven't guessed by now, this is our April 1 prank. Although RNAi-based technologies are already in various stages of development, they currently encounter many difficulties. Since it is an insertion of sections RNA, meaning a genetic code, the body suspects that this is a viral penetration mechanism and reacts accordingly, by activating the immune system or the cell's self-destruction mechanisms (apoptosis).

Accessing RNAi through the eye is particularly problematic, due to protective mechanisms in tears that include special enzymes that break down RNA. However, an effort is currently being made to overcome these difficulties and it is beginning to bear fruit in clinical trials, so that perhaps one day we will still be able to change the color of our eyes.

  1. After all, there will definitely be something like this one day...maybe not as you described but, considering how common plastic surgery for everything is today, I think it's only a matter of time.
Great prank by the way.. it took me half an article to realize that you worked on us 🙂
