"Eilat's Coral Reefs in an Optimistic View", the book by Dr. Yaakov Dafni, a lecturer at the Ben-Gurion University campus in Eilat, was recently published in both Hebrew and English under the name "Eilat's Coral Reefs". Dr. Dafni, a pioneer of marine biology researchers in Eilat, today sees the state of the coral reefs in the area in a more optimistic light than before.

On the 200 pages of the book "Coral Reefs in Eilat in an Optimistic View", Dr. Dafni explains the stories of about 500 animals and plants with explanations that are worth every soul accompanied by spectacular photos. All the animals and plants in the Eilatim book, and all of them were photographed during the last five years by the author and the photographers of the divers' forum of "Tafoz". The book is accompanied by a dictionary of terms from the field of marine biology, as well as indexes to the scientific and Hebrew (or English, in the English edition) names.

Dr. Yaakov Dafni, a lecturer at the Eilat campus in the course "Nature and Man in the Bay of Eilat" is a marine zoologist resident in Eilat. Along with dozens of scientific articles, Dr. Dafni wrote many popular articles on topics related to Red Sea animals.

Many will recognize Dr. Dafni thanks to his monumental story "Gulf of Eilat, From End to End", which was published eight years ago, and is the most comprehensive documentation in the Hebrew language of the Gulf of Eilat: from the geology and morphology of the gulf, through its flora and fauna, to the human history and effects The development of the Gulf of Eilat on the flora and fauna in its waters.

While the book "Bay of Eilat, from end to end" was largely pessimistic, as the name implies, the new book is more optimistic. According to Dr. Dafni's observations, in recent years there has been an improvement in the condition of the Eilat reefs. One of the most prominent manifestations of the improvement is the return to the bay of some groups of animals that abandoned it: sea lilies, for example, disappeared completely in the last decade and, recently, began to appear again in large numbers.

In the survey conducted by the author in the coral reefs of Eilat, about 150 stone coral species were found, including species that were known only from the south of the Gulf. Their distribution in the landscape has also improved. The condition of the reef in Eilat is encouraging, especially against the background of the depressing news coming from the oceans (Al Gore in his book "A Disturbing Truth" states that "16% of the coral reefs in the world were lost in 1998 alone, due to the bleaching phenomenon, which results from the warming of the sea).

Alongside an academic career, Dr. Dafni cultivates אתר אינטרנט which is a kind of definition of life in the Bay of Eilat. The site includes about 1300 species classified into groups: corals, molluscs, worms, crustaceans and echinoderms. Dr. Dafni recently added to the website an online guide to Eilat fish, which includes about 500 species of fish. The popular opinion among the public is that the reefs of the Gulf of Eilat were destroyed, which spoiled the experience of diving on the beaches of Eilat. The site, like Dr. Dafni's books, and especially his new book, prove in many colors that there is also something to see in the waters of the Gulf.

  1. I do not agree with the words of Assaf and Uri. Admittedly, it is difficult to prove a direct link between the source of pollution and the immediate state of environmental quality, but the northern coast has been heavily polluted in recent years. It is enough to swim along the breakwaters at the entrance to the eastern lagoon to witness the massive coral mortality there, and the desolation that prevails there. Despite the relative advantage that the book presents, one should not forget the neglected beaches, from the head of the bay, through the military port, the underwater restaurant, to the shore of Nahal Shlomo.
The required optimism also stems from the deepening involvement of divers and local youth in maintaining the quality of the marine environment.

  2. There is no doubt that the fight to remove the cages was actually a way for wealthy people to take control of the coastal strip of the companies that operated the cages. The greens were actually a tool in this move. In their blindness, they did not notice how they cheer up the situation and not improve it. The "greens" all over the world have been doing such nonsense for years. For example, the fact that the electricity in the world is not yet based on atomic energy is due to the fatal failure of environmental organizations which for years have been preaching against this safe and clean energy. When I say safe, I mean in relation to the number of deaths per year over a significant period of time (for example, 50 years). This analysis of course includes the Chernobyl disaster.

  3. About three years ago, when the debate about removing the fish cages from the bay was in full swing,
When "clear" they claimed again and claimed that the fish cages cause damage to the northern Gulf,
I argued that: according to the opinion of some experts who dealt with it, and observations of divers
and veterans in the Eilat Rif and its surroundings, there is no truth in the "clear" claim.
Being a small "expert" on the subject, I called on the green bodies to direct the fight
For the Gulf against major pests: Port of Eilat spreading potassium, Port of Aqaba spreading
Phosphate, a waste that takes up space and endangers the entire bay, the thousands of visitors and residents
who pollute the bay and its shores with garbage "from all good things".
A "clear" fight "succeeded" the cages are not, under the place where the cages were
A rich biological diversity has developed!
Dr. Dafni's book proves that the struggle of "Zelul" was at best wasted,
Because the big polluters continue, the "small" ones don't,
Too bad ! Too bad ! Too bad !

  4. Since I don't understand the meaning of the nickname, I ended up writing something that rhymes
