Earth's magnetic poles, north and south, have repeatedly reversed many times in the planet's history. The last time was about 780 thousand years ago. Geophysicists who study the magnetic field have long believed that the poles may be about to reverse again. And according to new findings, this may happen sooner than expected.

The European Space Agency's "Swarm" satellite array discovered that the Earth's magnetic field is weakening 10 times faster than previously thought, its strength decreases by about 5% every ten years, not every hundred years. The weakening of the field could indicate a battle reversal, which scientists predict may begin in less than 2,000 years. It also seems that the magnetic north itself moves in the direction of Siberia.

Geophysicists still do not fully understand the geomagnetic reversal process, but they agree that the Earth's field is like a dipole magnet. The center of the earth contains an inner core of solid iron and an outer core of liquid iron, whose electrical conductivity is high. The liquid iron in the outer core tends to float. As it heats up near the inner core, it rises, then cools and sinks down again. The rotation of the earth twists this moving liquid iron and produces a magnetic field that preserves itself, even if it has a north pole and a south pole.

Once in a while, local disturbances occur in the flow of iron, and they turn part of the field in the opposite direction, which weakens it. It is not known what causes these disorders. They seem to be an inevitable result of an inherently chaotic system, and geophysicists often encounter them in computer simulations. "Like a hurricane, it is impossible to predict [precisely] where and when the reversal will begin, even if you understand the physical principles behind it," says Gary A. Glatzmeier, a geophysicist at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Usually, the local reversal dissipates after about a thousand years, but sometimes the twist in the field increases and spreads and finally results in the reversal of the poles of the entire field. The overturning takes 5,000 years on average. Sometimes it takes 1,000 years and sometimes 20,000.

It is quite possible that the weakening of the field detected by the Swarm satellites will not lead to a complete reversal. And Glatzmeier does confirm that geological history has known many beginnings that ended in nothing. The decreasing strength of the Earth's magnetic field is now equal to the average strength over millions of years. For the reversal process to really begin, the field must add and weaken at the same rate for another 2,000 years.

It is difficult to speculate how a geomagnetic reversal will affect modern civilization, but it is unlikely to spell disaster for it. The field does provide essential protection from the strong solar radiation, but the fossil record does not indicate large extinctions or increased radiation damage in the reversals that occurred. The reversal of the poles may affect power grids and communication systems, magnetic disturbances of external fields have already disabled transformers and caused power outages. But Glatzmeier is not worried. "In a thousand years there will certainly be no power lines," he says. "Humanity will be so advanced that it will almost certainly have the technology to deal with reversals of the magnetic field."

  1. The meaning is that because of the law of persistence the sea drifts sideways and up or down and therefore there is no symmetry. Of course, the height of the mountains on the land also matters. Think about the following experiment: from above a continuous stream of water and below a large ball tilts to the side and rotates on its axis. Now you will see that the water will move to the side and up or down. Now we will slow down the rotation speed and straighten the tilt or leave it tilted. We will get a different water distribution. Now the question is whether there are connections between the rotation and the magnetic field. One direction. Does the reduction of the field result in a reduction of the rotation speed. Second direction. Does the fact that there is rotation create an alternating magnetic field so that the total field will never be zero but only the static field resulting from the core magnet will be zero..

  2. There are other phenomena that may be related to the displacement of the poles and are destructive. I will explain my words more precisely this time.
Due to the rotation of the earth around itself - the daily rotation, the land is not located as a strip of land around the equator horizontally but
2 main land systems: a horizontal one that includes Asia/Europe/Africa and one that includes the Americas. This is a scientific fact and not made up. If the earth stops rotating or even slows its rotation, two processes will occur: the daily cycle will change. A horizontal strip will be formed around the equator. Sections of land will be flooded and evacuated.
The rotation of the earth around its axis is perhaps related, in my opinion, to the creation of the magnetic field, similar to a generator for producing electricity, except for the static field created by the earth's core magnet. The core is made of iron and when it is a heart it is magnetized.
The magnetic field from the rotation is an alternating current but for all intents and purposes it sums vectorially with the DC field.
The rotation of the earth and the magnetic field is like cause and effect. Maybe the magnetism will change the rotation speed and maybe the rotation creates another magnetic field. That's why I asked if there is any knowledge about the exact relationship between the rotation of the earth and magnetism. The question is not nonsense. The meaning of reducing the rotation speed is extinction of the culture at least partially. The fact that there is possibly an alternating current magnetic field, in addition to the static field, means that it will never reach an absolute value. It is also interesting if anyone has tested a connection between life extinction cycles and the reversal of the field.

  3. Yehuda Svardamish

First, the continents migrate and once upon a time all the continents were connected (Pangaea continent) and they were all then far from the poles.

There may also have been warmer periods on Earth, but what is more important is the distance of the continents from the poles.

By the way, if I remember in England there were hippos at the time (animals that love heat) and it was after the era of the dinosaurs (because they are mammals).

  4. Yehuda
With that being the case in the past, we would expect to see evidence of warm periods at the poles, at the same time, and evidence of cold periods then in part of the equator - but only in part, and at the same time.
    Do you know such evidence?

  5. Perhaps, instead of asking why Mars will cool down, we should ask why the earth is still warm? What traumas has our ball gone through? Because the earth is special!

  6. for miracles
If the change of the magnetic poles is due to the movement of huge amounts of iron in the earth's core, then due to the law of conservation of momentum the entire sphere will be able to rotate in place.
But maybe it's just a delusional attempt and as the situation currently looks in the Haifa derby, Hapoel Haifa has a chance to win despite the 4 goal deficit to Maccabi Haifa, and I don't want to be right.
Besides that, I have enough of my opinions on the absence of dark mass, I need to add the absence of magnetic reversal and there is a reversal of the earth
    Good night

  7. Y.A
The Earth, which is tilted at 24 degrees, will begin to tilt more until it goes 90 degrees like Uranus and will eventually reach 180 degrees, which means that the northern hemisphere will become the southern and the northern will look like a southern sky and vice versa and the sun will also rise from west to east.
As if the earth is part of an engine of an electric motor. which rotates as a result of a magnetic force acting in the area.
Please respond gently, don't deny that this is a possibility. Please give conclusive proof that it can't be like that.
    good week
    Yehuda.

  8. Responses to the things written in the comments below:
    A. It is not possible for the KDA core to consist of two cores, because then there would have to be a factor that would resist the enormous force exerted on them and prevent them from merging into one core. That is, two nuclei, this is a very physically unstable state, so this is not what actually exists.
    B. The KDA magnetic field has no effect on the tide cycles. These phenomena are due solely to the gravitational force of the moon.
third. If the earth turns over does that mean we will have to stand on our heads to continue our routine? 🙂

  9. The core of the earth consists of two cores. Because in the past there was a collision between the earth and another globe, which led to the creation of the moon. There are myths surrounding science, such as the myth of a "free economy", not drinking after eating a watermelon, or economic independence.

  10. And by the way, if you are already making assumptions, should you also check the imaginary possibility? The one that will turn over is not the poles, but maybe the earth itself and the poles will stay in their place?
So please respond gently (after you laugh).
    good week

  11. I agree with Yossi. There is no doubt that such a tremendous event could be devastating in terms of life (after all, the migration of flying creatures of all kinds is apparently structured according to magnetism.)
That is why there is a great need for research on the issues Yossi raised
    good week

  12. In my opinion, the reversal of the magnets was accompanied by almost mass extinctions, that is, of many species of animals. The magnetic field protects from radiation.
I don't know if it has a part in tidal cycles in addition to the rotation of the earth and the moon.
If so coastal cities are in danger. Some may be flooded. Why would it have anything to do with the distribution of the sea. Because it constitutes another force, albeit in the direction from south to north. I would be happy to hear an expert opinion without defamation, what is true here.
In addition, is there an effect on the self-rotation of the Earth or is it due to inertia and the rotation around the Sun only.
The article should have addressed these two questions, and at least eliminated them or described their impact.

In the 2012 movie and another Hollywood movie about a journey to the bowels of the earth to correct the magnetism, the reversal of the poles is described as having a devastating effect but this is just a movie.

  13. Maybe, that's why there are more active volcanoes. Extreme earthquakes, such as the one in Japan.
