Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Minister of Science and Technology Ofir Akunis The winners of the Samson Prime Minister's Award for Innovation in the Field of Oil Substitutes for Transportation were announced today (Sunday): Prof. Doron Orbach from Bar Ilan University and Dr Lars Peter Lindfors and his team from the NESTE company in Finland. The two won the prestigious prize of one million dollars for the development of technologies that have the potential to be used as a substitute for transportation fuels. The prize is awarded for the sixth year in a row by the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Foundation. This is the first time that the prize is awarded to an Israeli researcher, after in previous years it was awarded to researchers from abroad.

The award, named after Eric and Sheila Samson, is the largest financial award in the field of alternative energy in the world and is awarded to scientists who have significantly advanced the subject. The winners were chosen from a large number of candidates recommended for the award by presidents of universities and research institutes and by managers in industries from around the world and in Israel. The winners were chosen by an international expert committee that submitted its recommendation for approval by a board of trustees headed by Prof. Yitzhak Apluig, former president of the Technion.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: "Israel is at the forefront of the smart transportation revolution in the world. We lead international solutions and collaborations. The State of Israel has become a center of knowledge, research, industry and technology in the field of fuel substitutes and smart transportation. The awarding of the award to an Israeli researcher is evidence of this."

Minister of Science and Technology Ofir Akunis He said today: "The award symbolizes the commitment of the State of Israel to promote the issue of oil substitutes for transportation, it has an impact on various aspects of our life here - economy, security, science and society. Israel is a pioneering country in many fields and we are working to ensure this for future generations as well.'

Prof. Doron Orbach from Bar Ilan University, the first Israeli winner in the history of this award, won the award for his groundbreaking contribution to the development of a new type of battery, including an innovative magnesium-based battery. His research has great potential to lead to the development of innovative batteries to drive electric cars and thus be a substitute for fuel.

Two wins in a week for researchers from Bar-Ilan

The president of Bar-Ilan University, Prof. Aryeh Tsavan, said in response to the award: "Bar-Ilan University is proud and congratulates Prof. Auerbach on winning the Prime Minister's Award for global innovation in the field of oil substitutes for transportation, and especially for being the first Israeli to win this award. His win is added to Prof. Yehuda Lindel's win of the RoM prize for cyber innovation, last week. Prof. Auerbach and Lindel are a beacon for research and entrepreneurship for me and for generations of researchers in Israel and around the world. This strengthens Bar-Ilan as a pioneer and leader in the development of sustainable energy technologies and cyber research, which will have a huge impact on the future of humanity."

  1. For miracles: in the field of fooling around, you forgot Pauling's war with Dan Shechtman regarding quasi-periodic crystals. The award committee waited - and only after Pauling's death did Shechtman receive the award.

  2. autumn
its sad …. It was possible for more than such a smart person. He's not the only one: Linus Pauling, the only person to win two Nobel Prizes by himself, started talking nonsense in his old age. In Pauling's case, it was his insistence that vitamin C prevents the flu and cures cancer (proven false).

  3. Skeptic2. You are right (whether the alternative energies are shos or not, the money should come from the commercial innovation and not from the prize), it is no coincidence that the one who distributes the "biggest financial prize in the field of alternative energy in the world" is Bibi, another occasion where his name is mentioned. It should be remembered that Israel, despite the sun, lags behind many European countries in the field of solar energy utilization, because the gas companies earn the big money and the money for cracking is left for rituals.

  4. The promotion of renewable energies is the farce of our time. Another way of shrewd businessmen to make an easy turn at our expense and win more applause. It is the way of progressives that they are interested in "promoting" things, but the simple truth is that if renewable energies were a big deal, there would be no need to promote them.

  5. This is the professor of chemistry and engineering who, after completing his master's degree, realized that there is enormous intelligence and highly sophisticated planning in the conduct of the world, and repented.
I read that he also invites anyone and especially scientists to confront him about it.
    interesting

  6. I do not believe a single word that comes out of the mouths of government representatives. Not interested in promoting renewable energies, otherwise they would have done it a long time ago. Global warming is not in their lexicon at all, certainly not after Trump said there is no such thing.
Besides, how will the members get rich from oil refining and polluting gas production?
