In 2009, the world celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of the father of the theory of evolution, Charles Darwin, and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book On the Origin of Species. In this seminal book, Darwin formulated the principle of natural selection, which is still valid today in modern biology and arouses no less intense controversy than when it was published in 1859.

As part of the global Darwin events, the British Council developed an exhibition presenting Darwin the scientist and researcher and his conclusions relating to heredity, variation and natural selection (evolution). The exhibition is shown in many countries around the world. In each country, the exhibition is produced in a local version and translated into the local language. At the Science Museum in Jerusalem, the exhibition will be presented in three languages: Hebrew, Arabic and English.

The exhibition, titled "Darwin Now", features photos and documents from Darwin's life. Among other things, it presents a basic sketch, in which Darwin describes his ideas about the origin of species, pages from the first edition of "The Origin of Species" and a watercolor portrait of the celebrated scientist. An important aspect of the exhibition refers to the relevance of the theory of natural selection also in current biological and medical research.

Simultaneously with the launch of the exhibition, a conference on evolution in science and art will be held at the Science Museum. Also, 11 monthly meetings will be held throughout the year at the Tamal Shalesh Cafe, located in the center of Jerusalem. These are informal meetings between a researcher from the Hebrew University and the audience "over a cup of coffee". The next meetings will be held on May 20 and June 8. All events, including the launch of the exhibition, are open to the public free of charge.
