An unusual and first-of-its-kind Israeli startup collaboration was signed between the Netanya-based precision agriculture startup CropX and NASA Harvest - an American research body that leads the agriculture program of the American space agency NASA. CropX, whose systems monitor and process in the cloud soil data from millions of dunams around the world, will provide NASA Harvest researchers with soil data that will be delivered to government bodies and agricultural experts in order to develop models to improve the prediction of soil and field conditions in a way that will improve insights for government bodies in the field of agriculture, increase field yields, and strengthen sustainability the lands.

The soil data that CropX monitors and processes around the world through soil sensors, field data, crop data and aerial photographs will be combined with imagery from NASA's satellite network that monitors soils around the world as part of the agency's agriculture program. The combined information will enable NASA to provide governments and stakeholders around the world with critical insights for data-driven decision making in agriculture.

Nadav Lieberman, CTO of CropX: "Satellite images have been integrated from the beginning of CropX into the algorithms we have developed, and our collaboration with NASA will provide vital agronomic insights through the layering of the data layer that CropX provides on the ground and the field together with photographs from the NASA satellite network. We expect that the cooperation will improve the quality of decision-making in the fields of agriculture in both developed and developing countries."

The start-up company CropX, established in 2015, is currently a world leader in agricultural data analytics based on field, environmental and soil sensor data. CropX provides farmers with cloud-based technology that connects to their irrigation systems. This technology is affordable and easy to install and allows farmers to increase agricultural yields and their quality while optimizing irrigation, fertilization and energy costs.

Last year, CropX acquired its competitor CropMetrics from Nebraska (USA) and the company Regen from Wellington (New Zealand). The company currently employs 45 people, 30 of them in Israel, and another 15 in the USA and New Zealand. Among the investors in CropX: the Innovation Endeavors fund of Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, the investment platform OurCrowd Finistere Ventures, and Greensoil Investments.
