Gordon Cooper, one of the original astronauts of the first US manned space program, the Mercury program and an American space pioneer, died at his home in Ventura, California at the age of 77. This was announced this morning by NASA.
Cooper, a former Air Force colonel, flew the sixth and final spacecraft in the Mercury program - the US's first manned space program. His flight on May 15-16, 1963 lasted over 34 hours and included 22 laps around the Earth - more than 3 times more than the American manned flights up to that time, and far above and beyond the technical capacity of the spacecraft according to its design. Two years later he served as manager and pilot of the Gemini 5 spacecraft, during which he and Charles Cunard set a new record by covering more than 5.3 million kilometers in a time of 190 hours and 56 minutes.
"As one of the original seven astronauts of the Mercury program, Gordon Cooper was one of the famous faces of America's young space program," NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe said in a statement.
"Cooper was indeed the typical astronaut of the elite crew, and he helped to gain the support and enthusiasm of the American public, and was essential to the spirit of the expedition." said.
Cooper and his fellow astronauts known as the Mercury Seven - Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Shira and Dick Slayton - were immortalized in Tom Wolfe's best-selling book The Chosen Crew, which became a blockbuster Hollywood movie in 1983.

I was a great skeptic until recently, but the many testimonies of senior figures - military officials, flight inspectors, pilots, scientists and more raised questions in my mind:
What is happening to them, have they all (the senior ones) gone crazy?
