Who learns from whom the use of medicinal plants?

Chimpanzees in Uganda eat unpalatable and non-nutritious herbs just to treat medical problems, just as traditional doctors recommend

Sabrina Krief, a researcher of chimpanzee behavior in the forest in Kibla Reserve (Uganda), told about her findings at a ceremony in honor of a collaboration between the Nature Conservation Authority in the division and the French Wildlife Authority.

According to her: the chimpanzees in the forest use "medicinal herbs" in the same way and for the same purposes as traditional / rural doctors, in the five years of research in which the researcher followed the group of chimpanzees she saw a deliberate use (by eating) of plants that have medicinal properties. In all cases the plants are not tasty and have no nutritional value. In other words, the only reason for eating plants is to solve medical problems.

Among the plants eaten/identified were: Vernonia amygdalina for curing malaria symptoms, as well as barks from the trunk of acacia trees to eliminate intestinal parasites that cause diarrhea.

The identification of the plants and the composition of the active substances in them was done by observations as well as by testing the components of urine and feces excreted by the chimpanzees. Since traditional doctors provide their patients with the same "medicines", the question arises who learned from whom?
