Earth

Earth surrounded by plasma from a distant pulsar. Image was prepared using DALEE and is not a scientific image.

Plasma storms have been found in space around Earth that is supposed to be empty.

By analyzing a twinkling pulsar, scientists have mapped plasma plumes and a bow shock wave with unprecedented clarity, upending the assumption that our local interstellar neighborhood is calm.

The researchers collected and analyzed seismic data recorded around the South Sandwich Islands from 121 repeated earthquakes that occurred between 1991 and 2023. They also used data from two Soviet nuclear tests between 1971 and 1974,

Strange lumps in the depths of the Earth's mantle are remnants of the planet from the collision that also created the moon

The new research from Calcutta suggests that remnants of that ancient planet known as Theia are still inside the Earth and explain the origin of the "lumps" near the core-mantle boundary. Other remnants of it coalesced to form the

Things that Yorams know: why does the earth rotate like shawarma?

What would happen if the earth did not rotate on a north-south axis (like a shawarma skewer) but on some axis on the equator?

Does the geological clock based on the half-life of radioactive materials need to be recalibrated?

Are events in the distant past, such as the extinction of the dinosaurs, about ten percent closer in time to us? And how does it relate to solar flares? This is according to an ongoing study by a group led by Prof. Yitzhak Orion from Ben University

Things that Yaorim know: where does the compass needle point?

Niv asks: Why does the compass point north if the dynamo that flows under the surface of the ground, under the entire earth, is the one that creates the magnetism?
Is it possible to reconstruct the Earth's magnetic history using glacier samples?

The Earth's magnetic history is written in ice

The eastern Mediterranean, west of Cyprus and east of Crete (the shaded figure on the map), preserves remnants of an ancient ocean.

One of the 60 micrometeorites found in a 2.7 billion year old limestone from the Pilbara region of Western Australia. These micrometeorites are composed of iron oxides formed when meteoric iron dust particles oxidized as they traversed Earth's atmosphere, revealing that the upper atmosphere was surprisingly rich in oxygen.Credit: Andrew Tomkins

A rare hour. The earth slows down and so occasionally it is necessary to add a second to the year to coordinate the real time with the coordinated universe time set by an atomic clock. Photo: shutterstock
