"Blich" high school students from Ramat Gan won an international safe-breaking competition
Is breaking safes an educational matter? Depends on who you ask, and also where and when. The physics tournament in the name of Shalvet Friar, organized for the 17th year by the Shoham unit of the Davidson Institute for Science Education, the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science, is without a doubt an educational enterprise that is both impressive and entertaining. This year, 73 groups of 38th grade students majoring in physics from high schools around the country participated in the tournament. Of these, XNUMX teams reached the final stage, including five teams from Canada, Great Britain, Romania and Slovenia. The final phase lasted two days and included the safe breaking competition between the participating teams, a safe exhibition and the award ceremony.
The safes were built by the students, with their locking mechanisms based on different scientific principles. All teams try to break into all safes. The winning team is the one that manages to break into a greater number of safes, while the teams that manage to break into their safe are fewer. The winning team, a representative of "Blich" High School from Ramat Gan, presented a safe built according to Bernoulli's principle (the higher the speed of the flow of a current such as a gas or liquid over a surface, the less pressure the current will exert on the surface). Other winners were the representatives of the Amos de Shalit High School in Rehovot, who were the outstanding "burglars", those who managed to break into the largest number of safes and another group from "Blich" High School whose safe won the title of crowd favorite.
