Bacteria will neutralize the sewage smell

A technological company has developed a system capable of removing the bad smell as well as other pollutants through a biological process based on a strain of bacteria that feeds on hydrogen sulfide

The EcoVerde company has developed an innovative filtration system that removes the bad smell as well as other pollutants from wastewater through a biological process based on bacteria that feed on hydrogen sulfide, a substance characterized by its stinky odor similar to rotten eggs. The new technology is supposed to be more environmentally friendly than the systems already operating today in the market, thanks to the fact that it does not require chemicals or consumables such as activated carbon. The American company is one of the most experienced companies in the field of odor removal.

How does the system work - air is drawn from the sewer pipes or from industrial wastewater reservoirs, is transferred to a system (bioscrubber EG.) that evaporates it and which directs the pollutants that were in it (ammonia, mercaptans and hydrogen sulfide) and that caused the bad smell into the filter where the bacteria feed on them and so on neutralize their disturbing environmental influence.
"Our system is based on a non-degradable filter (for which we will apply for a patent) into which we connect different types of bacteria selected according to the types of application and pollutants. The removal of pollutants occurs with the help of a natural process of oxidation. The substances responsible for the stench are consumed by the microorganisms, so the more pollutants there are in the air, the more food there will be for the bacteria, and all this without increasing the costs of the system," explains inventor Uribe Lobo.

The system uses several strains of autotrophic (self-feeding) bacteria to remove the gases hydrogen sulfide וMethane and in heterotrophic bacteria to remove volatile organic compounds (such as ammonia and mercaptans). As part of the installation stages of the system, a mixture of bacteria is introduced into the filter during the first three days of its operation. When polluted air passes through the filter it reaches the layer of bacteria where they consume the various pollutants. The new system, which originated in the USA and which operates in accordance with the most advanced environmental regulations, is expanding to other countries, such as Mexico.
