IBM researchers succeeded in creating an image in atomic dimensions: with the help of a scanning electron tunneling microscope, IBM researchers are able to move and place each individual atom in its designated point, in order to build a complete "image". The photos are on display in a new exhibit at the US Patent Office Museum in Alexandria, Georgia.
The research work in this field is carried out in IBM's research and development laboratories, as part of an ongoing effort to minimize electronic circuits, in order to build computer components at an atomic and molecular level. In one of the demonstrations of the ever-developing ability, the researchers at IBM also presented an "electron cage": 48 iron atoms in a circular structure, which insert some of the electrons moving on the surface between them and force them to go into a quantum state, while being enclosed by the "fence" of the atoms.
