The participants in the International Olympiad are chosen every year from thousands of students who participate in Chemistry - the national chemistry competition for high school students. The three winners have already won the International Chemistry Olympiads in the past - Ron Solan won a silver medal in the International Olympiad last year and a gold medal in the Mendeleev Olympiad this year, which is a prestigious Olympiad in which participants compete from all over Asia and Eastern Europe. Rina Sebastianov won a bronze medal at the 2016 International Olympics and Ofir Shmol won bronze at this year's Mendeleev Olympics.

All Israeli contestants in the International Chemistry Olympiad undergo screening and preparation in a special program run at the Technion under the auspices of the Ministry of Education. The head of the program, Prof. Zeev Gross from the Shulich Faculty of Chemistry, explains that the impressive achievements of the Israeli contestants in the Chemistry Olympiads are based on extensive and in-depth preparation in the theoretical and practical aspects. This complex matter is carried out by the main trainer of the program, Dr. Izna Nigel-Ettinger, who is assisted for this purpose by the laboratory engineers Emma Gertz and Gabriela Halevi and Ms. Mira Katz, who is in charge of the logistics management. Faculty members and doctoral students - all from the Shulich Faculty of Chemistry at the Technion - are partners in this extensive effort.

  1. Also at the Earth Science Olympiad in France in August this year, our representatives had impressive achievements. All four participants won an individual bronze medal. The participants also won a gold and two silver medals in mixed team competitions. In addition and above all, they won a special UNESCO prize for the leading team.
