A new center that looks like a combination of a museum and an amusement park may soon allow humans to experience a colony on Mars without leaving Earth.
The research and assistance center will be operated by Four Frontiers, a space commercialization company from California whose main goal is to establish a permanent colony on Mars.
"We see ourselves as pioneers of the new space frontier." said the company's CEO, Mark Homnik. "We are following the path taken by the initial researchers such as NASA and the European Space Agency. We are going to settle a new estate, which we will turn into houses and give them added value.
The four areas of the book are managed by the same people who helped establish the Mars Foundation - a non-profit organization that prepared a detailed plan for the settlement of Mars. This group is also known as the "Homestead Project." (Havat Beit project).
However, while Havot Beit is mainly concerned with the narrow sense of preparing a colony to be used by a small group of first residents on Mars, the company has a broader view, say the partners in the company.
"We want to establish a Mars colony as indicated by the vision of the Mars Foundation because we see it as an essential element that will help us open up the rest of the solar system." says Joseph Palaia, the company's vice president of operations. "However, there is a wealth of possibilities beyond that which we are also examining."
The four areas of the book in question are the Earth, the Moon, Mars (including its two moons Phobos and Deimos) and the asteroids.
"The start of the solar system economy is happening as we speak," said Humnick. "This is not something that will happen in 50 or 100 years, but in the next decade or two."
Humnik says that the company's focus will be on the development of technologies and planning for the Mars colony. The tools that will make it possible to reach Mars are already a matter that the company will leave to its business partners.
