2021 a year of action to curb the climate crisis or blah-blah-blah?

Will decisions and statements made in the past year moderate the disaster? Below is a summary full of skepticism

In order to mitigate the disasters of climate change, it is necessary to prevent the warming from reaching 1.5 degrees above the period before the industrial age. However, according to the current situation, there are many chances that within five years we will reach and maybe even cross the 1.5 degree line.

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Warns that in April 20201 we have already reached an increase in the average temperature by 1.2 degrees,

And the UN Environment Department published a study in October according to which: "If there is no commitment to cut theemissions, by the end of the century the temperature will rise by 2.7 degrees".

Additional reports from the UN agencies show that "the concentration of greenhouse gases has reached record levels and the world is approaching warming that endangers future generations."

Already today, climate change has an expression in extreme phenomena such as floods, droughts, fires, and more that multiply every year. Meteorological data

show that In recent decades, climatic disasters have hit thePoorer, vulnerable countries that caused extreme food shortages. Paradoxically, the most affected countries are those that are least responsible for the situation, those that emit the least.

According to the main clauses bParis Agreements in 2015

There is a need to help the populations in vulnerable countries with funding and adjustments that will allow them to mitigate and absorb the vulnerability. But for many of those countries, time is running out. This is especially the case in small islands that are covered by the rising seawater that urgently need funding for the construction of defenses, as well as in dry countries that suffer from long periods of drought that change with high frequency.

According to the United Nations Environment Agency (UNEP)

"Even if all the countries of the world stop emissions today, the climatic vulnerabilities will continue for decades", therefore it is necessary to speed up the transition to clean energy sources and to stop the use of mineral fuel in general and coal in particular.

At the same time, there is a need to take immediate and significant steps that will allow adjustments and preparations for the recession and damage prevention, but despite the urgency, progress towards the necessary transition is slow And governments continue to produce polluting energy at a level that causes continued warming.

According to the latest forecasts for the next two decades, despite a minimal decrease in the use of coal, the use of mineral fuel of all kinds will increase at least until 2040. This is according to the report, which includes information on the main countries that produce mineral fuel.

To change this forecast, a multi-participant conference was held at the UN In which representatives of governments and private companies pledged to provide clean electricity to 350 million households. Now we will see how the promises will be fulfilled.

The increase in cases of climatic disasters is a clear sign that nature is responding to human actions, and hence the essential need to promote action to restore the balance that has been broken, while taking nature into account, is clear. To this end, it is necessary to invest heavily and to change the approach to reciprocity with nature, an approach that will require the restoration of areas and their return to their natural state. According to the UN estimate, it will be necessary to restore an area of the order of 10 billion square kilometers. Such restoration will protect biodiversity and human societies supported by biodiversity.

According to the UN, in order to succeed in mitigating climate change and the loss of biodiversity and soil damagethat immediate investments of hundreds of billions of dollars are needed.

These investments will triple by 2030 and quadruple by 2050. In the meantime, with more than a million species at risk, countries are called to cooperate to ensure a sustainable future for humans and the planet.

בSpring 2022 will open a UN-sponsored conference on biological diversity,

The conference aims to outline a global road map for the preservation, protection, restoration and sustainable management of the environment and biodiversity, forestry, transition to green energy, changing lifestyles and other solutions for mitigating the climate disaster. All this must happen in the next decade, except that a large investment is required.

More than a decade ago, the developed countries pledged to raise 100 billion dollars every year to support the developing countries. Although the commitment has not been fulfilled, there are signs that the business world is waking up to the recognition that investments in the climate sector make economic sense, and so, for example, are the many countries that support ventures to produce electricity from the sun or the wind, which turn out to be cheaper than building coal mines, transporting and burning it. In addition, investment in clean energy will create about 20 million jobs by 2030.

In October company managers came to the conference  in which guidelines for sustainable development were outlined. The conference was sponsored by the Alliance for Sustainable Development (SDGs)

which has developed tools with the help of which billions will be invested to finance sustainable ventures. Let's hope for realization...

At the climate conference in Glasgow (COP26 UN Climate Conference), promises made in Paris in 2015 were discussed and how to implement them. Warnings and demonstrations ahead of the conference demanded actions instead of bombastic statements that are not backed up by actions.

Convention veterans claim a positive feeling andIn the first days of the conference there was a commitment to restore the world's forests

In combination with the commitments to combat climate change, to stop the destruction of the environment and to protect indigenous rights. About 500 international companies and businesses agreed to finance about 40% of the amounts decided in Paris in 2015 to mitigate global warming,

However, many of the leaders of the Least Developed Countries (LDC) who came to the conference with hopes for commitments that would allow Survivors of a billion people living in these countries They left the conference disappointed.

On the energy day at the conference The commitment to stop investments in coal was announced (Global Clean Power Transition Statement) and move to investments in clean energy, except thatCoal is a major industry in the economy of many of the "committed" countriesTherefore, the fulfillment of the obligation is questionable.

The wording of the decision was also changed and instead of the initial intention to stop ("phase out") the use of mineral fuel, it was decided to reduce ("phase down") the use.

There are those who think that the agreements are not enough to save the world from climatic disasters, but in contrast there are those who find in the spirit in which the discussions were conducted hope that at the next conference in Sharm-e-Sheikh, Cop27, there will be real progress for a sustainable future for humans and our world.

After all this, I would add that instead of controlling the environment for the sake of the human population, there should be control of the human population for the sake of the environment.

  1. In Israel, the lack of efficient, available and cheap public transportation (including on Saturdays!!!), requires people to travel by private vehicle and for hours in traffic jams contributing to pollution. Considering that here the climate changes are particularly fast, this is simply a mass suicide resulting from the cynicism and impotence of governments of "Zion lovers" so to speak

  2. The only way that seems logical today to stop emissions is a rapid transition to the use of fourth or fifth generation nuclear reactors
