Image from a Type Ia supernova simulation. In the simulation, a star exploding in a Type Ia supernova (in dark brown). Material from the supernova was ejected at a speed of about 10,000 kilometers per second. The material hits its companion star (in light blue). This violent collision produces ultraviolet pulses that eject from a "hole" created by the companion star. Image: Dan Kasen
