A connection was found between receiving antibiotics early in life and growth retardation in boys

Prof. Omri Koren from the Faculty of Medicine of Bar-Ilan University in the Galilee, together with researchers from around the world found that children who received antibiotics in the first two weeks of life were less tall compared to their peers. The phenomenon was observed only in boys, not in girls. The researchers believe that there is a connection between the phenomenon and the composition of the microbiome. Laboratory research in mice reinforced the advocacy

Exposure of babies to antibiotics in the first weeks after birth is associated with low height and weight in boys up to the age of six. The phenomenon was not observed among girls. These data are the result of research published in the journal Nature Communications., whose authors believe that the explanation for the findings lies in the development of the population of intestinal bacteria - the microbiome.

Previous studies show that the use of antibiotics in newborns in the first weeks of their lives may lead to a change in the composition of the microbiome in the intestines. However, the long-term effects of antibiotic exposure have not yet been studied. Prof. Omri Koren, a researcher from the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine of Bar-Ilan University, and colleagues from around the world examined the relationship between exposure to antibiotics during the first two weeks of life and the growth of children up to the age of six. The study involved 12,422 boys and girls born between 2008 and 2010 in Turku, Finland, as well as a cohort of children from Germany.

The researchers used a statistical ranking based on growth charts and found that the boys, but not the girls, until the age of six, who were exposed to antibiotics after birth, displayed low growth figures compared to those of their peers who were not exposed to antibiotics.

In separate experiments, led by doctoral student Atara Uzan, mice were implanted with fecal bacteria from babies that were exposed to antibiotics and from those that were not. In the mice (males) that were implanted with a population of bacteria from babies that received antibiotics, reduced growth was found, while no changes were found in the mice that received the same treatment.

The researchers believe that early exposure to antibiotics is associated with long-term changes in the gut microbiome, which may result in reduced growth in boys up to the age of six. However, the researchers point out that there are limitations to the study, such as an incomplete understanding of the reasons that led to exposure to antibiotics in the first place, so the findings should be interpreted with caution. These days, a number of follow-up studies are being conducted examining whether there are additional effects of early antibiotic treatment and why the effect was only observed in boys. In addition, the researchers are trying to isolate probiotic strains to restore the bacterial population to its previous state. The researchers wish to emphasize that antibiotics save lives and it is possible that in the future a personalized probiotic supplement will be taken along with the antibiotic treatment.
