A historic record for the Israeli team in the Math Olympiad: 7th place in the world

The Olympics were held in St. Petersburg, Russia and were conducted online. The members of the Israeli delegation received three gold medals, two silver and one bronze

A historic record for the Israeli team in the Math Olympiad: 7th place in the world. In the Olympics held in St. Petersburg, but the Israelis participated in it remotely due to the corona virus, the team won three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal:


  • Yahal Manor - a student at Law Bek High School, from Haifa - won a gold medal.
  • Yair Shoham - student of Ben Gurion High School, Menas Ziona - won a gold medal.
  • Almog Veld, a student of Ahad Ha'am High School, Petach Tikva - won a gold medal (he also won a bronze medal at the Olympics in 2020).
  • Omri Zemar- student of urban high school XNUMXst, from Modi'in-Maccabim-Reut- won a silver medal.
  • Shahar Friedman - De Shalit student, from Rehovot - won a silver medal (he also won a bronze medal at the Olympics in 2019 and a gold medal at the Olympics in 2020).
  • Dror Farid - student of Urban High School XNUMX, from Tel Aviv - won a bronze medal.

The team's coaches are a team of Olympians and mathematicians led by Lev Radzivilovski. This year the responsibility for training the Israeli national team was transferred from Tel Aviv University to the Weizmann Institute.

The Ministry of Education and the Center for Future Scientists of the Maimonides Foundation lead the training of Israel's national teams to participate in the International Science Olympiads as part of a joint venture.

The International Mathematical Olympiad IMO Held this year for the 62nd time (founded in 1959), Israel has been participating in the Olympics since 1979. This year, 619 participants from 107 countries took part in the Olympics. The Olympiad took place over two examination days. On each of the days the students were required to solve for 4.5 hours a test that consisted of 3 questions of a very high level of difficulty in the fields of elementary mathematics: algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory.

The student team that participated in the Math Olympiad was trained at the Weizmann Institute of Science led by the academic director, Prof. Avraham Izenbod, the head coach, Lev Radzivilovski, the head of the delegation, Dan Carmon and the team of coaches - Daniel Kenner, Sasha Tolsnikov and Guy Capon.

The Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology, Orit Parkash HaCohen wrote in a tweet on Twitter: "This is what the future generation of the startup country looks like! At the same time as the sports olympiad, the math olympiad takes place, which excites me just as much. The Israeli and young competitors won 6 medals and brought us great pride. Ambition, perseverance and excellence are qualities found in our high-tech people, I have no doubt that I will see you there in the future."
