Dassault Systèmes, the 3DEXPERIENCE company, announced that the European Spallation Source ERIC (ESS), a research infrastructure project funded and operated by a partnership of European countries, is using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to build the world's leading neutron research facility at Eid Lund in Sweden.

The dedicated solution for industry, Integrated Plant Engineering, provides powerful digital planning and collaboration applications for project management and regulatory compliance, in a unified environment that connects thousands of engineers, planners and manufacturers across Europe.

Upon completion, ESS will provide a more efficient approach to neutron scattering research, enabling sustainable innovation in areas such as green energy, structural engineering, food technologies, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, information technology and transportation. The research design includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator in the world with 22 instruments at the cutting edge of technology, as well as an array of supercomputing data management and laboratories and a software development center, which will be used by thousands of researchers for decades.

The close partnership between ESS and Dassault Systèmes began already in 2013 with the development of "Integrated Plant Engineering" - a solution that provides ESS with a collaborative environment for design control and design data consolidation during the entire project period. The solution's applications combine civil and mechanical engineering for a complete and up-to-date review of the design, which allows ESS to ensure compliance with the requirements. Users can optimize the technical design of the facility, optimize construction processes, and ensure that essential decisions are made based on up-to-date and accessible information.

"Using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and guidance from the local team of Dassault Systèmes and its partner TechniaTranscat, everyone involved in the ESS project can create, update and reuse information related to the planning and construction of the neutron research facility, in a controlled and traceable environment," said Peter Radal, director of the engineering and integration division at ESS.
"ESS is a long-term project for the future of human society, and we need the best tools available to make it a reality."

"ESS is one of the largest projects of technological and scientific infrastructure today, and opens avenues for important discoveries," said Monica Mangini, chief strategy officer at Dassault Systèmes. "The 3DEXPERIENCE platform helps connect securely and simplify connections between the parties involved in this international collaboration. Users such as ESS benefit from the ability to deliver technically challenging plants while meeting schedules, budgets and specifications, minimizing waste and achieving maximum process efficiency."
