The European Mathematics Olympiad for Girls (EGMO) has been held since 2012, and the State of Israel is participating in it for the sixth year (starting in 2016). This year Georgia led the Olympics.

The competition took place this week on two exam days, in each of which the female students were required to solve a 4.5-hour test, consisting of 3 questions of a high level of difficulty in the fields of elementary mathematics: algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory.

The Ministry of Education and the Center for Future Scientists of the Maimonides Foundation are leading the training of Israel's science teams for participation in the International Olympiads as part of a joint venture. The student delegation that participated in the Olympiad was trained at the Weizmann Institute of Science by a team of coaches headed by the chairman of the mathematics team, Prof. Avraham Eisenbod, and the head coach, Lev Radzivilovski. The students were accompanied by the head of the delegation, Dr. Dan Carmon and the deputy head of the delegation, Dr. Miriam Farber.

Minister of Education, Yoav Galant: "Towards the end of Independence Day, we were informed of an achievement which is another reason to be happy on the national holiday. The medals awarded to Nega and Liara are a source of great pride for the entire State of Israel, and the result of prolonged effort, accompaniment and preparation that yielded great achievements. I also extended my greetings to the professional team that accompanied the contestants and trained them in a manner worthy of all appreciation. The education system will continue to stand by the contestants and by the side of good and talented ones like them, in order to ensure that Israel will continue to stand at the international forefront.'

Director General of the Ministry of Education, Amit Adri: Today Israel marks another impressive achievement in the field of science. The achievement in the mathematics Olympiad joins the series of achievements that Israel recorded in the last Olympiads in physics, computers and chemistry. On the celebratory day of Israel's 73 years of independence, the achievement of the education system receives greatness and great excitement. The winning students join the ranks of the outstanding ones that the state cherishes and exalts above a miracle in its state ceremonies.

I would like to congratulate you, the winners, and express my deep appreciation for the achievement. I am sure that he will advance you in the future to key positions in the field of academic, scientific and technological research, and will lead Israel to many more important achievements."

CEO of the Future Scientists Center, Eli Fried: "In the week in which we celebrate the 73rd Independence Day, we are proud to be blessed with the admirable and inspiring achievements of our female students, who will represent the State of Israel with great respect. The impressive personal and national achievements give great satisfaction and emphasize the importance of the cooperation between the Center for Future Scientists and the Ministry of Education. We will continue the joint investment, which is designed to give students the highest quality tools to achieve significant and groundbreaking achievements."

Dr. Dan Carmon, head of the delegation: "This year's competition was tough, but the students put all their energy into dealing with the questions for the entire nine hours of the exams. I congratulate them and am very proud of them for their achievements, and wish them many more successes in the future. After a year of virtual training, we were very happy that we had the opportunity to hold the competition physically at the Weizmann Institute, and also spend time in each other's company, and I thank everyone involved in organizing the event."

  1. Another proof that when Israeli girls study mathematics without the presence of boys, they are more successful and even win international medals. Conclusions must be drawn and applied in groupings by gender. Kudos to the students who brought us honor.

  2. In mixed competitions (boys and girls) in mathematics, as in the other fields of science and engineering, girls do not begin to come close to the first places.

  3. 1. Well done amazing achievements that have not received enough
    Resonance in the media.

    2. Why the gender separation? Girls are just as talented as boys. Even if there are fewer girls who apply to the field (which is a pity) those who apply should achieve no less high than boys in such competitions

  5. I wonder if the very existence of this competition based on sexual affiliation (for girls only), expresses what everyone thinks but does not dare to say explicitly because of the political correctness regime: women are weak in real professions compared to men. This is similar to the situation in other fields, such as sports and in contrast - in flying skills and military warfare in general, and in other typical fields.
For the attention of the women's organizations (feminists), the High Court of Justice, the IDF, educational institutions, etc., etc., as well as those who claim that gender is not primarily a function of sexual association but a matter of social construction.
Of course, this does not mean that women are better than men in other typical areas. The point is that limits must be placed on discourse and action patterns based on certain feminist beliefs.
