Olympic achievements for the Israeli team in mathematics: Nega Friedman, a XNUMXth grade student from Rehovot, and Yaara Shulman, a XNUMXth grade student from Herzliya, recently won gold and silver medals inEuropean Mathematics Olympiad for Girls. 213 girls from 54 countries participated in the competition; Israel was ranked ninth. The Israeli delegation was trained at the Weizmann Institute of Science by a team of trainers headed by the chairman of the mathematics team Prof. Avraham Izenbod and the head coach Lev Radzivilovski from the Department of Mathematics.

"Approximately 20 coaches work with the team," says Prof. Eisenbod on behind the scenes of The Israeli team in mathematics numbering about 50 youths. "The trainings are very intense, and require a huge investment from both the coaches and the students. The members of the team are indeed very talented, but this talent is not enough - very hard work, adherence to the goal and commitment are required here." The math team is part of a project Israel national teams in the sciences common toMinistry of Education ValFuture Scientists Center of the Maimonides Foundation.

This is the tenth year of the Math Olympiad for girls - and the sixth year of Israel's participation. Besides Friedman and Shulman, the girls' delegation to the Olympics this year also included Tamar Par, a XNUMXth student from Herzliya, and Nicole Grossman, a XNUMXth student from Petach Tikva.

This year the competition was spread over two days, where on each of the days the students were required to solve a test consisting of questions of a high level of difficulty in algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory. "This year's competition was tough, but the students put all their energy into dealing with the questions during nine hours of exams," says the head of the delegation, Dr. Dan Carmon, who accompanied the students along with his deputy, Dr. Miriam Farber. "I congratulate them and am very proud of them for their achievements, and wish them many more successes in the future."
