Artificial cells manage to move

Chemists in Japan and Italy report the development of tiny oil droplets that move themselves, and that could form the basis with which artificial cells could move. The joint research by the University of Tokyo and the Protolife Laboratory in Venice is scheduled to be published in the August 8 issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
Researcher Tadashi Sugawara and his colleagues point out that efforts to produce artificial cells - cells capable of, for example, producing biofuel - have so far focused on genetics and the ability to breed. The group headed by Sugawara previously reported in the same magazine on a fatty capsule capable of self-reproduction. American scientists recently announced their success in transplanting a bacterial genome, an achievement described as an important step towards the creation of artificial life forms.
The new research focuses on "a necessary and perhaps more fundamental characteristic of cells, which is their ability to move." In laboratory experiments, the researchers demonstrated that small drops of oil, which they used to represent artificial cells, went into a state of continuous movement within a chemical solution for several minutes, until they eventually stopped.

According to the researchers, the movement of the oil droplets is an example of a "primitive form of chemical movement (chemotaxis)", which is one of the basic cellular reactions with the help of which the cell directs its movement towards certain chemicals in its environment. The same researchers claim that the research may provide the infrastructure with which future movement systems for artificial cells will be designed.

  1. I completely agree with Amit - the Hidan site does an excellent job and provides interesting and current information - there will be many sites like it!

Indeed, regarding the news - wow, what a genius solution. But if you could tell me briefly - what gives these cells the ability to move?

  2. Stunning !
Pertains to the fine seam line between a chemical reaction and a biological reaction. In fact, to the moment of the creation of life itself, which may always be happening around us without our even being aware of it...

  3. Eyal in Hayat Rabak, there is also room for news alongside articles and articles.
By the way, this is very interesting information and the source is also not very long.
Avi and Anat thank you for the energy and investment in this charming corner that they call Hidaan.
    keep up the good work

  4. A very basic description with few details that is not suitable for a scientific site like "Hidan", how did they do it? How exactly do the cells move? What is the basis and what are the cells composed of……

It would have been better not to write anything down, or to delve a little deeper into the sources and write down important and basic details that would logically appear in such an article.
