A researcher at the Technion won an award on behalf of the Schmidt Foundation (founded by one of the founders of Google) in the amount of 2.5 million

According to the foundation's statement, "Prof. Kaminer will develop algorithms that mimic human creativity. Inspired by his experience as an experimental physicist, a field where surprising results drive discoveries and stimulate creativity"
The Technion researchers sent laser bursts (pulses) to the edges of the model (the two-dimensional structure) that created the hybrid waves in the material. The researchers discovered that these waves travel at a speed almost 1,000 times slower than the speed of light in free air (and almost 1,000 times faster than the speed of sound in free air).
